Spot Pet Insurance

About

There is not much "about us" information on Spot's website. It primarily focuses on their core values and principles and highlighting what they can do for the pet parent as far as coverage and customer support. Spot does seem to keep most thing vague on their sites or offers minimal information.

Coverage

  • They have an annual deductible. Are deductible then copay like Embrace.
  • Offers a 10% multipet discount.
  • Waiting period: 14 days for everything.
  • Insures age 8 weeks to forever. Includes illness coverage for a pet starting at any age.
  • Available in US, Guam, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Canada.
  • Has a 24/7 pet health service.
  • Covers the usual accidents and illnesses. They also have a customizable Accident Only plan.
  • Does not have any optional coverages. So, the policy includes prescriptions and exam fees.
  • They also include coverage for behavior, alternative care, congenital and hereditary disorders.

Coverages

Rx Food and Supplements

Dental

Microchips

Will cover rx foods and prescribed supplements while treating an AC or IL. It will no longer be covered once it becomes maintenance.

Covers dental cleanings if treating a coverable illness.

Covers microchips under the IL portion of the policy.

Spot does categorize their pre-exs as curable. For their curable pre-exs they will expire the pre-ex if no signs, symptoms, or treatments are noted in the past 180 days, they will expire it and provide coverage. The only exception they have noted as not being "curable" are knee and ligament issues.

Pre-existing Conditions

As usual, pre-existing conditions are not covered. Pre-ex means a condition for which any of the following are true within before the effective date of a pet insurance policy or during any waiting period: (i) a veterinarian provided medical advice; (ii) the pet received previous treatment; or (iii) based on information from verifiable sources, the pet had signs or symptoms directly related to the condition for which a claim is being made. This definition is similar to Embrace. However, the website does not specify how far back into the pet's history they look. Typically it is 12-24 months, but Spot has no specifications. We cannot assume they look at the full history, but that is what it appears to be.

Embrace is less costly than Spot. Both quotes are for a full Accident/Illness plan. Rx and Exam fees added on for Embrace. Both are for a 1 year old, female, golden retreiver. Use the slider to see the full quote.

Wow Effect

A pet parent cannot cancel the wellness add-on without cancelling the whole policy.

Conclusion

Spot does have a full comprehensive coverage for pets of all ages. They expire pre-exs in 180 days without signs/symptoms/treatment. They do appear to include everything into one full package. However, their wellness is itemized and the owner cannot cancel it without canceling the whole policy. They also are not as customizable and we have more coverage level options. They are also more expensive than Embrace (after trialing several different breeds, cats/dogs, ages etc).

A dietary supplement, vitamin, probiotic, or nutraceutical formulated, tested, and manufactured with guaranteed analysis and safety standards to aid as part of the treatment of a specific covered medical condition. A veterinarian must prescribe the supplement. Supplements do not include herbs, either in single form or combined with other herbs, Cannabis products (CBD), food products, general health maintenance vitamins or supplements, or weight loss supplements, even if prescribed or dispensed by a veterinarian.

Reimbursed with Wellness Add-On

Covers dental illnesses and accidents. There does not appear to be a sublimit for dental care. Exclusions include: Aesthetic, cosmetic, endodontic, or orthodontic dental services such as caps, crowns or crown amputation, fillings, implants and root canals or planing.

  • Routine dental cleanings
  • Preventive dental exams
  • Teeth polishing
  • Dental X-rays for preventive screening
  • Pre-existing dental conditions

Embrace will cover crowns and root canals on a pets "vital teeth" (typically teeth needed for a pets survival). And will cover root planing (a more extensive cleaning) under accident if meets certain perameters.

Putting my detective hat on...

Calling Spot to clarify

I called Spot to clarify what time frame they look into medical history. I used a scenario where I told the agent my dog had a mast cell tumor 3 years ago and asked how far back they look. Agent: It depends. If the dog is under 4, they can look back 1-3 years. Me: I guess you wouldn't want to continue to cover mast cell tumors over and over. Agent: It depends what the medical history says what treatment was done, and how eveything was handled.
