Building on foundations
The bricks on the side of the facade here are key demonstrations of how not just the cathedral but everything in Toledo is built upon centuries of history, the bricklaying brings Mudéjar elements to an otherwise Gothic cathedral. Additionally, this can be seen not just from the actual construction of the cathedral but of its location and placement in the city. Centuries of muslim rule created certain rules for the construction of buildings, including that the mosque that was originally in the place of the cathedral. This rule is called the Qibla which dictates the fact that all mosques must face Mecca forcing the foundation of the cathedral and many other places in the city to face out of line with others.
