What does sustainability mean?

Sustainability means using resources wisely, so that they will continue to be available in the future. Sustainability takes many different forms, but they all have some fundamental ideas in common.

Sustainability Principles

Future Generation
Human Awareness
Biodiversity and Environment

Balance the need of the present day with those of future generaition

Become aware of the human impact on the natural world.

Human survival depends on the natural environment

Why is sustainability important?

There are now more than seven billion people on Earth. These billions of people use the planet’s resources every day. Human activity has harmed the environment in many ways. Some of the resources that people use cannot be replaced once they are used. People also use huge amounts of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) which has led to pollution and other problems. Sustainability addresses ways to protect and conserve the environment and biodiversity.

Sustainability for industries

Industries —such as manufacturing, agriculture, and construction— depend on fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas). Fossil fuels are non renewable resources. Once they are used up, they will be gone forever.

Fossil fuels create pollution, which affect the land, air and water.

Burning fossil fuels produces greenhouse gases

Sustainable Alternatives

They are all renewable energy sources

Sustainability for individuals

Individuals also can change how they use energy and what products they buy and use in order to work toward sustainability.

3. Reduce plastic usage

1. Solar Panels

People can reduce the usage of plastic and recicyle the plastic the do use.

People can install solar panels on their house, instead of electricity generated by coal.

4. Sustainable Transport

2. Reduce water usage

People can buy appliances designed to reduce water usage.

People can bike, walk, or take public transportation instead of driving their cars.

1. Transport

Examples of sustainabile transports in cities.

Bike lanes to encourage cycling instead of cars

Electric vehicles to reduce emissions

Car-sharing or reduced car use

Pedestrian-friendly streets (walkable cities)

2. Green Spaces

Examples of green spaces in cities.

Urban parks and public green areas

Green roofs and vertical gardens

Protected natural spaces inside cities

Trees planted along streets

3. Food Production

Examples of sustainable food production in cities.

Urban gardens (community gardens)

Growing food in cities (rooftop farming)

Local food production (short supply chain)

Final project- FASE 1

Lavorando in piccoli gruppi, fotografa i luoghi sostenibili della tua città (esempio: parchi, piste ciclabili, aree pedonali, bidoni della raccolta differenziata).

Final project- FASE 2

Riporta le tue foto al gruppo, poi scrivi una didascalia per ogni foto (una in italiano ed una in inglese).

Ruoli e Responsabilità

Explorer (esploratore)

Photographer (fotografo)

  • scatta le foto
  • sceglie i luoghi sostenibili
  • osserva la città
  • trova esempi di sostenibilità

Writer (scrittore)

Translator (traduttore)

  • traduce le didascalie in inglese
  • corregge e adatta il testo alla consegna
  • scrive le didascalie in italiano
  • aiuta con le idee

Guida alle fotografie

Cosa non puoi fotografare

Cosa puoi fotografare

  • persone in luogo pubblico
(a meno che non vi sia l’autorizzazione espressa o tacita o vengano oscurati i volti in caso di pubblicazione)
  • luoghi pubblici
  • strade
  • parchi
  • litorale
  • oggetti

FASE 1 – GUIDA PER LA DIDASCALIA (ITA.)

  • Crea una didascalia rispondendo a queste domande.
  • Dove: Dove si trova? È al chiuso o all’aperto?
  • Chi: Ci sono persone? Cosa fanno? Perchè?
  • Cosa: Che cosa puoi vedere? Case, natura, oggetti, animali?
  • Quando: Che stagione è? Che momento della giornata è? Che ore sono?
  • Perchè: Perché è un esempio di sostenibilità?

Ci troviamo all’aperto, in un parco con alberi, case e una pista ciclabile. Alcune persone camminano o vanno in bicicletta. È giorno, probabilmente in primavera o estate.

For each image, translate the Italian caption into English . Use the following phrases:

  • This is…/There is/ There are...
  • It is in…/ The picture shows...(in the morning/ afternoon/ evening)
  • The picture is from the 28th of March...
  • It is sustainable because…

Step 3

The important thing is that everything fits the theme.

Global Warming

From one issue to another

Global warming is the long-term rise in the average temperature of the Earth's atmosphere and oceans. It is primarily caused by human activities—such as burning fossil fuels—that increase heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. This process causes the planet to get hotter, leading to climate changes.

The main cause of global warming is the burning of fossil fuels.

Step 2

Also animations to make it fun.

Step 1

You can add interactivity to your timeline.
