Role of the RCoA Regional Anaesthesia Adviser

Representation and College liaison

  • College rep in the region with role of approving certificates and training equivalence levels.
  • Involvement in College tutor appointment process.
  • Liaise with heads of school, DME and trust DME.
  • Collaborate with other RAs – pain and ICM.
  • Represent the views of local anaesthetists and educationalists.

Quality, standards and safety

  • Promote educational and clinical standards and guidelines.
  • Support ACSA.
  • Support local and regional QI initiatives.

Training and education

  • Oversee regional training and progression.
  • Advise regarding training standards.
  • Ensure quality of educational supervision.
  • Support delivery of local courses.

Career support, assessments and reviews

  • Support, mentor and provide career advice for local consultants and resident doctors.
  • Approval of training programmes including MTI and Portfolio pathway programmes.
  • Approval of training progress and certificate completion.
  • Attendance/involvement in ARCPs and Interviews.
  • Review of training quality and availability of training opportunities.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations.

Workforce planning and post approval

  • Advise and approve new consultant job descriptions.
  • Provide input on local workforce planning.
  • Perform as AAC rep at consultant interviews.
  • Conduct audit on RCoA JD requirements for instance wellbeing lead and support.
