What does it look like?
A mermaid is a mythical aquatic creature with the head and upper body of a human woman and the tail of a fish below the waist. Mermaids are typically portrayed as beautiful, enchanting, and seductive creatures, however, in original myths, they were often depicted as dangerous, monstrous, or ominous creatures. Ultimately, their beauty is subjective and rooted in fantasy.
Where are the mermaids from?
Mermaids don’t come from one place, they appear in many cultures throughout history. The earliest known “mermaid” was the Syrian goddess Atargatis, who became half‑fish after diving into a lake. Greek myths about Tritons and water nymphs later shaped the familiar mermaid image. Scientists, however, believe that sailors may have mistaken manatees for mermaids, especially during long sea voyages. Across the world (from ancient Syria to African legends like Mami) Watamermaids remain a widespread and enduring mythical mystery.
Stories
Mermaids haven't always looked the way we imagine them today. In Ancient Greece and Homer's Odyssey, they weren't fish-women, but dangerous bird-hybrids who lured sailors with their deadly songs. The image of the girl with a fish tail only became popular later through European and Celtic legends. While science explains these "sightings" as encounters with manatees or seals (even Christopher Columbus was fooled!), mermaids remained a hit in the "cabinets of curiosities." People even created fake skeletons using dried fish parts to trick the public. Today, the mermaid is a powerful symbol of the sea’s mystery and beauty. Whether seen as scary predators or romantic icons, they still represent our deep fascination with the unknown world beneath the waves.

When was the first story about it?
The first mermaid story dates back to around 1000 BC in ancient Assyria. It tells the legend of the goddess Atargatis, who fell in love with a mortal shepherd. After accidentally causing his death, she was consumed by shame and dived into a lake to hide by becoming a fish. However, the water could not fully conceal her divine beauty, so she was transformed into a creature with the upper body of a woman and the tail of a fish. This myth established the iconic image of the mermaid that eventually spread through Greek mythology and global folklore.
