What makes a good character?

A discussion and guide on character creation and analysis.

Why are characters so important?

Usually, stories follow two distinct structures: plot-driven and character-driven. Characters are so pivotal to a story that you cannot have a story without them. Even plot-driven stories need characters to...move the plot forward.

What's in anArchetype

The cheat code to character creation and analysis.

Archetype vs Stereotype

  • story element that are based on universal patterns of human nature.
  • a character trait or emotion that is universal.
  • exp. "A character who values law and order above all else. They are defined by their need for stability."
  • an oversimplified notion or characterization applied to a person or group of people
  • a reductionistic notion
  • exp. "An asian character who is nerdy and awkward, with very strict parents."

"I start out giving characters archetypes and parameters. Once I know the basics and have a rudimentary model, it's easier to carve unique curves and edges."

The Difference in Character

Why you shouldn't create "realistic" characters.

Characters are not "real people"

  • You should strive to create a three-dimensional character.
  • An interesting, well-developed character isn't always the most "realistic".
  • Real-life humans like you and me are too complicated to be good characters.
  • It's impossible to write a 100% accurate portrayal of a real-life character.
  • Writing a character 1:1 with a real person would make them seem unfocused and inconsistent.

Open Floor

  • Do you agree with the notion that "realistic" characters aren't always the most ideal?
  • What are some of your favorite characters in media? Why?
