How did Dinosaurs evolve?
Tetrapods (4 footed) – 4 legs or 2 arms & 2 legs – most land animals Lobe Finned Fish are the probable ancestors of most Tetrapods – we can trace our bone structure all the way back to them
Amphibians have small lungs they pump by moving the floor of their mouth - but they also breathe through their skin and lay water borne eggs, so need to be moist and always near water
Reptiles developed stronger lungs & skeletons so they could move away from water – they reproduced using amitotic eggs and survived later drying out events that wiped out many trees & plants
Egg with amniotic fluid
Early reptile Hylonomus also a tetrapod
How did Dinosaurs evolve?
Dinosaurs are a kind of REPTILE
Small lizards evolved from amphibians and then evolved into bipedal predators and then dinosaurs Other prehistoric reptiles, include pterosaurs, mosasaurs, ichthyosaurs, plesiosaurs and dimetrodon. They are often thought of as dinosaurs, but are not classified as dinosaurs
MESOZOIC
Saurischians = therapods and sauropods
What were the first Dinosaurs?
Eodromaeus 1.2m long
Eoraptor (231.4myo) may be a common ancestor of all dinosaurs and was a small, bipedal predators But there may be other candidates for their common ancestor like the tiny Scleromochlus or slightly larger Eodromaeus. The first dinosaurs were early therapod-like dinosaurs like Herrerasaurus which then diversified into the 3 different kinds

Early to Middle Therapods - late Triassic to late Jurassic
The next stage Therapods evolved from Eodromeus-like creatures and some became large and heavy like Ceratosaurs. Others remained slim and are called Ceolophysoids.
Ceolophysoids – (2-3m) were small slender animals (215-200mya) Dilophosaurus - twin crested no evidence for or against expanding frill neck
Ceolophysis
Ceratosaurus
Middle Therapods (160-145mya) Ceratosaurus – (5-7m) means horned lizard – it has nasal horns and hornlets in front of its eyes – Megalosaurus — the "great lizard“, first ever dinosaur named

SAUROPODS
Started off small and bipedal
Sauropods were a group of long-necked, herbivorous dinosaurs within the clade Sauropodomorpha and existed from the Late Triassic to end Cretaceous (210–66 mya). Mainly Herbivorous with extremely long necks and tails, they also had small heads with peg-like teeth, massive pillar-like legs and large barrel-shaped bodies.
Later Sauropods were the largest known land animals – much debate about which is bigger!!
Ended up huge and full of air sacs and hollow bones
Stegosauria
Bipedal
Mid THERAPODS - Spinosaurids
Spinosauridae is a family of large, mostly fish-eating (piscivorous) theropods. They lived from the Early to mid-Cretaceous period (~130–95 million years ago). Famous for their elongated crocodile-like skulls and (in some) sail-like structures on their backs.
Key characteristics Long, narrow snouts full of conical, non-serrated teeth — excellent for catching slippery prey like fish. Some had sails (tall neural spines on their vertebrae), possibly for display, thermoregulation or energy storage. Strong forelimbs with large, hook-like claws (particularly on the first digit). Evidence suggests semi-aquatic adaptations – maybe an ambush feeder like herons
Spinosaurus mirabilis
Large Variety of Spinosaurids – Wikipedia 1.Spinosaurus, 2.Oxalaia, 3.Iberospinus, 4. Sigilmassasaurus, 5. Vallibonavantrix, 6. Ichthyovenator, 7.Baryonyx, 8. Cristatusaurus, 9.Irritator, 10. Suchomimus, 11. Siamosauris, 12. Ceratosuchops, 13. Riparovenator
Late THERAPODS – Tyrannosauroidea (166 to 66mya)
Later Tyrannosaurids (Late Cretaceous) Gigantic apex predators (10–12 m), heavy, deep skulls, tiny two-fingered arms, very powerful bite force (possibly biggest ever) Examples: • Tyrannosaurus rex • Tarbosaurus (Mongolia) • Albertosaurus (Canada) • Daspletosaurus Large body size may have been due to the extinction of other large therapods leaving an opening for large apex predators to evolve Later Therapods became lighter and more birdlike! Eoraptor
