The Craft of Active Learning
SCENARIOS
Theme: Wide range of ability / engagement In one group you have:
Learners working at a very low level
Learners who finish everything quickly
Some who refuse to start Topic: Any structured task (e.g., creating a CV, completing a workbook task)
Theme: Low confidence / fear of getting it wrong You’re delivering a session on employability skills (CV writing or interview prep). The group barely speaks. When you ask questions, you get: Shrugs “Don’t know” Avoidance (phones, looking down) You know some learners have had negative school experiences and are scared to be wrong.
Production constraint - Must include movement
Theme: Low energy / post-lunch slump
It’s after lunch.
Learners are:
Tired
Distracted
On phones You need to deliver content on goal setting or personal development.
Production constraint - No worksheets allowed
Production constraint - Must include challenge and/or competition
YOUR TASK
Lesson RemakeRemake a lesson and make it gogglebox worthy! You must:- Add an interactive element
- Learners doing more and saying more than you
- Use at least 1 active learning strategy
TONIGHT ON GOGGLEBOX...
When presenting back, you should start your presentation setting the scene - 'Tonight on gogglebox...'
TONIGHT ON GOGGLEBOX
We're watching a group of learners who think that employability skills are pointless... but this lesson might just change their minds
Main Activity: “Fix the Mess” Give each group a messy real-life scenario:
Turning up late, arguing with a manager, not communicating
Task:
Act it out badly first Then: Remake it the right way. Peers to give feedback
Hook (Immediate engagement)
Put up 3 real-life scenarios:
“You’ve got £20 for the week, what are you doing?”
“You’ve got a job interview tomorrow, what do you wear/say?”
“Your manager says you’re late again, what happens next?”Learners vote: “Handled well” 👍 “Disaster” 👎
After each role play:
“What did they do differently?”
“Why does that matter in real life?” Give 30 seconds silent thinking before answers are shared.
Learner Activity - In pairs:
“What’s the worst job or school experience you’ve had?”
“What made it bad?”
Then:
Create a group list: “What NOT to do in the workplace”
Active strategies used: Think-pair-share Discussion from lived experience
Final Reflection: “Would You Hire Them?” Quick vote:
“Would you hire this person now?”
Then:
“What actually changed your mind?”
