Description of the artwork
This is a famous painting. In it, I see two lovers kissing. However, there is an unusual and surreal detail: their faces are covered by a white cloth. This element transforms a simple love scene into a symbolic one. The ovoid shape of the cloth gives them a sense of protection.
The main colors are red, black, and white. The artist used oil paint. The background is simple: painted with dark colors that highlight the figures. The overall scene shows two lovers kissing and speaks of incommunicability.

Emotions, sensations and personal response
This painting makes me feel curious because I ask my self, "Who are the two figures behind the veil? What are they feeling?"
When I look at them, I also feel fear and uncertainty because the absence of faces makes the scene difficult to read. It makes me think of love and mystery. In my opinion, the most important detail is the veil, because it creates suspense.

Magritte painted "The Lovers" after the death of his mother, who was found with her face covered by a veil. Some believe this painting is linked to that personal trauma.
There are two versions from 1928: one at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and another at the MoMA in New York.

I like this work because it's special: instead of showing us emotions directly, Magritte uses a scene in which the emotions are hidden. It makes me wonder, "Can love be real if you don't see the other person?
