Allusion
Protagonist
Allusion
Thomas is the protagonist in the Maze Runner as he is the story's driving force and the plot centers around him
The Maze Runner uses allusion by naming the characters after historical figures, using their role in the story as a link For example: Alby ( the leader of the Gladers) comes from Albert Einstein, who was a leader in many different fields.
Allusion
Allusion
Archetypal
Conformity
In the Glade, conformity is represented by the strict rules, specific roles, daily routines, and discipline
Thomas is the '' Christ Figure '' archetypal as he defies death multiple times when it may have been impossible, performs countless of miracles and uses justice and logic to overcome problems
Dissimulate
Impose
Surveillance
Every Glader's memories are suppressed and forgotten upon their arrival in the Glade. This makes their true identities and pasts unknown, and makes us wonder if people like Thomas or Teresa can be trusted
Surveillance is represented by the small, robotic beetle blades that monitors the boys' every movement
Imposition is represented by the strict rules and forced roles the Gladers have to follow in order not recive punishment
Scapegoat
Tyranny
Dictatorship
IIn a attempt reign in the disorder in the Glade, Alby tries to sacrifice Teresa and Thomas to the Greivers to end the danger
Tyranny is represented by the power the creators of the maze hold over the boys.
Alby and the keepers have control over every boy's life as soon as they enter the glade, whether it is assigning a job or the rules given out
Allegrory
Totalitarianism
I think that in a way, the maze represents the government as just like the maze walls shift every night, a corrupt government can change its laws to whatever benifits them
Totalitarianism is shown by the boys having no personal choice, constant watching over their fear being used as a weapon against them
"If you ain’t scared, you ain’t human. Act like it."- Alby
Info
Dystopia
The Maze runner fits into the dystopian genre by trapping characters into a judgemental, opressive society where a powerful organization is working against their beliefs
Alby's quote shows the main conflict between vulnerability and resilience. It sees fear as a basic human emotion , which validates the Gladers' fear while also encouraging them to find the power to continue alongside it. This represents the main theme of the story - true humanity is not shown by an absence of fear but by the determination to keep peace and keep moving in the face of a unknown danger.
Did you know?
The author James Dashner got the idea for the series in November 2005 when he went to bed and had a mental image of teenagers living inside an unsolvable maze full of hideous creatures.
