QUESTION 1/10

Historical Context

QUESTION 2 /10

In 1869, three Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word were sent to San Antonio at the request of Bishop Claude Marie Dubuis to respond to a devastating cholera epidemic. Rooted in the Catholic healing ministry of Jesus Christ and a call to care for the sick and most vulnerable, their courageous service laid the foundation for what would become CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System. Their arrival was part of a broader movement that began in France, where Bishop Dubuis invited religious sisters to Texas to extend the Church’s healing presence to a rapidly growing and underserved population. This legacy continues today through CHRISTUS Health, carrying forward a mission grounded in compassion, dignity, and service to those most in need.

QUESTION 9 /10

The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio became an independent congregation relatively early in their history, distinct from both the original Lyons community and the Galveston foundation. This allowed them to respond more directly to the needs of South Texas, shaping ministries in healthcare, education, and social services based on the realities of the communities they served.
