Why distance matters.
In English, demonstratives change with number and distance from the speaker.
Near the speaker: this (singular), these (plural).
Far from the speaker (or not within reach): that (singular), those (plural).
Think of arm’s length: if you can touch it → this/these; if you need to point from a distance → that/those.

Leo: Maria, come here! Look at this photo. It is very old.Maria: Oh, wow. Who is this little boy in the front? Leo: This is my brother, Carlos. We were at the beach. Maria: He looks so happy! And who are these people standing behind him? Leo: These are my parents. They loved that beach. Maria: It looks beautiful. Wait, look at that tall building way in the background. What is it? Leo: That is the old lighthouse. It’s not there anymore. Maria: And look at those funny birds in the sky! Are they seagulls? Leo: Yes! Those are seagulls. They always tried to steal our food!

Por qué la distancia Importa
En inglés, los demostrativos cambian según el número y la distancia del hablante.
Cerca del hablante: this (singular), these (plural).
Lejos del hablante (fuera de alcance): that (singular), those (plural).
Piensa en la distancia del brazo: si puedes tocarlo → this/these; si debes señalarlo desde lejos → that/those.
