DAY 4 Bit scary. The nearby mountain is actually an active volcano called Vesuvius. Around lunchtime, the ground started shaking and a huge cloud of dust and ash sprouted out of Vesuvius and began raining down on Pompeii. My owners grabbed their valuables and fled. Now it’s just me here under about a metre of ash and dust. Could things get any worse?

What a week! They say ‘walls have ears’ – and they’re right. Today, a couple walked past on the street outside and said how dull I looked. Well, frankly, so do all the other houses in Pompeii from the outside.

A) How does the inside of the house differ from the outside?

The words ‘how dull I looked’ shows that people think the oustide of the house is plain and boring. This suggests that the outside of the houses in Pompeii were bland and without decoration in contrast to the inside.

Yes, they COULD – AND DID. The next day, hot ash and gases and destroyed the city. Most people got away, but many also died. About 2,000 years later, found me buried under 6 metres of ash and volcanic rock. What’s left of me and the rest of the city now gives you modern-day people an into what Roman life was like.
