“I was at the beach swimming with Jonny and Joel, my idiot brothers. They got bored and went to buy chocolate biscuits and I… I got a bit carried away.” “I see.” Leonora raised a scorched eyebrow. “And chocolate biscuits? What are those?” “Um, they’re biscuits. With chocolate on.” “Oh yes, right.” Another pause. “What’s chocolate?” “You don’t know what chocolate is?” “I know what it is… in theory. Just never tasted any. And I thought children weren’t allowed it? It’s against the law.” “Whoa,” said Jack, a blizzard of question marks drifting between them. “Where did you say we are again?”

“Crabby Island. We’re a long way from… things. Don’t worry, though, people get washed up on these beaches all the time.” “Really?” “Actually no. Never. You’re the first one.” “Then how will I get back home? My mum, dad – everyone will be worried!” “Let’s not think about that now,” she said. “There’s only a 76 per cent probability you’ll have to live here forever.” “Oh right, you’re joking,” said Jack, flashing his lopsided smile. She smiled back, uncertain why this information was amusing. She’d spent years trying to escape from Crabby Island. And he wouldn’t be laughing if Uncle Luther found him here. Neither of them would.
