Leonora’s thoughts often skipped across the horizon to the world far beyond. Just where did her Uncle Luther go to? And why could she never go with him? Like 2 + 2 = 7, something just didn’t add up. She tried to imagine where he was, what he was doing, what the mainland was like. Was it true that children were banned from laughing? Was school really twenty-four hours a day? And could you actually be put in prison for eating sweeties? She had no idea. She did know the mainland must be a bleak, gloomy place if her uncle liked spending so much time there. But she longed to see it for herself. One day. At last they reached the extra-fun-funicular railway she’d built down the wooded gully into the cove. She was just about to step into the repurposed tea-crate passenger car, when Twitchy’s magnificent whiskers started vibrating. Leonora shuddered.

She knew they were tuned for trouble, like a seismograph detecting earthquakes. He stood on his hind legs and sniffed the salty air. Then a distant gargling sound invited itself into their ears without even asking. It didn’t sound like anything she’d heard before. It didn’t sound human. It didn’t sound good.

“FNERGLE!!” “BLLAAAAARG!!” “FROOOOOSH!!”
