Leadership & Power Styles

As one of the youngest MPs, she embodies a symbol of possibility and indigenous representation, especially for Māori youth. Her authenticity, cultural pride, and confidence make others want to follow and emulate her. Her influence comes less from authority and more from who she is and what she represents.

She uses her power to educate others about Māori issues, colonization, and current inequities (Time, 2025). She helps shape narratives by bringing historically marginalized knowledge into mainstream discourse. Her leadership influences how others understand and interpret key issues.

Her advocacy is rooted in protecting Māori identity and ensuring young people see themselves reflected in leadership spaces. Her leadership centers on vision, identity, and empowerment, not just policy outcomes. She inspires engagement by connecting political issues to cultural heritage and future generations.

She demonstrates strong knowledge of Māori history, rights, and political issues. Her ability to speak on complex sociopolitical issues gives her credibility beyond her age. People trust her voice because it is informed, grounded, and culturally rooted.

Leadership Traits & Characteristics I Noticed

The Influence on my future work

As I reflect on my future, this case study inspires me to...

  • Trust & empower young leaders
    • Hana-Rawhiti has taught me that the rising leaders of the next generation are passionate and, when given the opportunities, can drive impactful change. As a supervisor of undergraduate business students, I am committed to trusting the voices of the rising generation.

  • Take up space at the table
    • Hana-Rawhiti said, "We must have a seat at the table" (Time, 2024).As a woman of color, I have a duty to represent not only myself, but the generations, cultures, and communities that have shaped me. I am committed to making space for those who are still on their way and to being an example of leadership in every space to those who see themselves in me.

Thank you!
