Preserving biodiversity
Biodiversity, pillar of life
Much more than a catalog of species, biodiversity is a living network, fundamental for the balance of ecosystems and human life.
Three essential dimensions :
1. Ecosystem diversity : forests, grasslands, wetlands, agricultural areas…2. Species diversity : plants, animals, microorganisms, fungi3. Genetic diversity within species → Key to resilience against diseases, climate, disturbances
Accelerated and systemic erosion
• 1 million threatened species (IPBES)• 75% of terrestrial and 66% of marine environments altered by human activities
Main pressures :
• Habitat destruction (urbanization, deforestation, fragmentation)• Resource overexploitation (hunting, fishing, unsustainable harvesting)• Multiple pollutions (plastic, chemical, light, noise)• Climate change (shift of habitats, thermal stress)• Invasive exotic species (pests, diseases…)
A sixth mass extinction is underway, with major consequences for agriculture, food security, and human health
International mobilization needed
• Nagoya Protocol : fair sharing of genetic resources and traditional knowledge
• Post-2020 Global Framework (CBD COP15) : - Expand protected areas - Reduce human pressures - Restore ecosystems - Preserve genetic diversity
Biodiversity is at all scales – ecosystems, species, genes – and it requires coordinated action from states, businesses, and citizens

IN SUMMARY
Preserve biodiversity
Agriculture as a lever favorable to biodiversity
• Crop diversification• Reduction of chemical inputs• Creation of ecological infrastructures (grass strips, hedges, fallows)
Agriculture is a natural lever for supporting and improving biodiversity.
At Limagrain: a mobilization at all levels
Varietal creation as a driver of cultivated biodiversity
• Approximately 300 new varieties per year, adapted to a diversity of soils, climates, and agricultural systems
• Examples of natural resistances:- Tomatoes resistant to the ToBRFV virus (virulent and highly aggressive virus, appeared in 2014, capable of causing severe infection on tomatoes).- Carrot Terapur trapping nematodes (worms damaging crops since the ban of a pesticide in Europe in 2018).
A strong role in forest biodiversity
• In the professional market, 2 out of 3 trees planted in France come from Vilmorin-Mikado seeds
Concrete actions on sites
• Biodiversity diagnostics to guide preservation actions.• Specific arrangements: nesting boxes...• In Brazil and South Africa, specific training sessions are provided to employees to catch and release snakes into their natural environment.
