Political ideologies

EQ: What are the general viewpoints of conservative and liberal ideologies?

What is it?

Ideologies are a set of beliefs, values and ways of thinking that shape people's views of the world. A political ideology encompasses beliefs about the role of government in society.

Media Family Education SOCIAL GROUPS OTHER FACTORS

Family

Your family is the first and biggest influence on how you see politics. While parents who are very into politics have a huge influence on their kids' future beliefs, that doesn't mean children always stick with their parents' views forever. Family values such as religious beliefs can largely shape our viewpoints on key issues.

Social Groups

At school, you start to connect with friends on an intellectual level, sharing and debating ideas with people other than your family. Studies show that kids often have their first real discussions about their political views with their friends. Examples:
  • Friends
  • Coworkers
  • Classmates
  • People may associate with people with similar beliefs.

Media

Most people now get their political information online. It's not just news channels like CNN or Fox on the internet; there are also countless YouTubers, TikTok creators, and bloggers giving their own takes on politics. More and more, people use social media like X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to share political news and opinions—and that includes your friends, politicians, and even government groups.

Education

Generally, the more education someone has, the more likely they are to be interested in politics, show up to vote, and get involved in other political activities. The schools in which people are educated and obtaining advanced degrees shapes their vantage points, often on specific topics such as economics, science, and global issues.

Other Factors

Socioeconomic status
  • How someone grows up may have an influence on their political ideology
Geography
  • Where someone lives may have an impact on how they vote and what side they align with.
Life experiences
  • If someone goes through a certain experience in life it may push them to one side of the spectrum or the other.

Take a guess!

The Political Spectrum

A political spectrum is just a line used to map out different political beliefs. The most common one in the U.S. places views on a scale from left to right.
The Political Spectrum tells us two things:
  • How much and how fast someone thinks the government should change.
  • How involved should the government be when it comes to people’s lives, business, and money?

          What sets the parties apart?

          Democrats
generally seen as liberal because they support government regulation
          Republicans
generally seen as conservative because they advocate a reduction in government

          FUN FACTS

          DEMOCRATS

The Democratic donkey started as an insult and a pun. In 1828, Andrew Jackson's opponents twisted his name (Jack-son) to call him a "jackass." Jackson thought it was funny, leaned into the nickname, and started using the tough, stubborn animal as a symbol on his own posters.

          REPUBLICANS

The elephant first appeared as a Republican symbol during the Civil War because soldiers used the phrase "seeing the elephant" to mean experiencing combat. However, the symbol didn't become popular until cartoonist Thomas Nast used it in a famous Harper's Weekly cartoon in 1874.
