BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.
THE PLOT
The story takes place in London in 1984. The city is part of Airstrip One, a province of Oceania. Society is ruled by English Socialism, an extreme totalitarian regime dominated by the figure of Big Brother. He is a leader whom no one has ever seen in person, but he watches everyone through "telescreens." In this world, privacy is non-existent: every movement, word, or facial expression is monitored. The Thought Police are responsible for identifying and eliminating not only physical crimes but also "thoughtcrimes".
EXPLANATION OF THE STORY
The protagonist is Winston Smith, an employee at the Ministry of Truth. Even if he feels alone, Winston still keeps the ability to think for himself. He begins to keep a secret diary and starts a clandestine relationship with Julia. Together they try to join the ‘Brotherhood’, a secret group that fights against the Party. They trust O’Brien, an important Party member, because they think he is on their side. But he betrays them.
EXPLANATION OF THE SORY
Winston is arrested and taken to the Ministry of Love, where he undergoes months of physical and psychological torture. This re-education process culminates in Room 101, the place where every prisoner is confronted with their biggest fear. For Winston, the worst fear is rats. He is very scared and screams that Julia should be punished instead of him. At the end of the story, Winston realizes that he now loves Big Brother.
GEORGE ORWELL’S VISION
George Orwell wrote his book as a warning against totalitarian regimes like those of Stalin and Hitler. He shows how absolute power can destroy human identity. To control people’s minds, he created the idea of ‘Newspeak’. This language removes words for ideas like ‘freedom’ or ‘revolution’, because if people cannot say something, they cannot think it.
Famous slogans:
- "Ignorance is Strength"
- "Freedom is Slavery"
- "War is Peace"
- "Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past"
- “Freedom is the freedom to say that two plus two make five.”
CYBERBULLYING
Orwell’s world is similar to cyberbullying in how people share anger. In the book, citizens show hate against the public enemy during the ‘Two Minutes Hate’. Online, this happens all the time. When someone is attacked, many users target them, often without knowing the truth. Like Winston, a cyberbullying victim feels the whole world is watching. Bullies find the victim’s weak points (appearance, secrets, or orientation) and expose them online. The goal is ‘social death’: to isolate the victim and destroy their support.
Dark Web: Resistance or Trap?
In the book, Winston looks for the ‘Brotherhood’. Today, the Dark Web is a hidden part of the internet that governments cannot control. It can give people freedom, but it can also be dangerous. Like O’Brien tricked Winston, the Dark Web has criminals and people who try to control others.
