Sage is one of the most rewarding plants to grow: it's hardy, fragrant, and incredibly useful in the kitchen. However, despite being a "survivor" native to the Mediterranean basin, it has some weaknesses that can lead to its decline if left untreated.
Enemies and Common Problems: Even a hardy plant can have its difficult moments: Powdery Mildew (Powdery Mildew): If you see a white powder on the leaves, the plant is either short on air or too humid. Reduce watering and move it to a sunny spot. Aphids: Small black or green insects. You can combat them with a solution of potassium-rich soap or simply water and Marseille soap. Yellow Leaves: Often indicates overwatering or a nutrient deficiency (although sage does not like very rich soil).
The Golden Rule: The number one cause of sage death is root rot. Being an aboriginal plant of arid zones, it cannot tolerate waterlogging. The soil: It must be well-draining. If growing it in a pot, use a mix of all-purpose potting soil and sand or expanded clay. Watering: Water only when the soil is completely dry to the touch. In winter, watering should be drastically reduced. The pot: Make sure it has clear drainage holes. Avoid waterlogged saucers.
Light and Location: Sage is a "child of the sun." Without proper exposure, the stems become long and weak (etiolation) and the aroma fades. Exposure: Requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Ventilation: It loves air. Don't "suffocate" it with overly dense plants; air circulation prevents powdery mildew (a powdery mildew on the leaves).
