Il suo territorio è prevalentemente collinare mentre le montagne sono basse e arrotondate perchè sono antiche e hanno subito per più tempo l'erosione della pioggia e del vento. I rilievi principali sono il massiccio del Gennargentu, il monte Limbara e i monti del Sulcis. La pianura più estesa è il Campidano.
