An American sociologist who argued that female delinquency often resulted from conflicts between individual desires and social expectations, a perspective he outlined in The Unadjusted Girl (1923).

Cesare Lombroso was an Italian criminologist who argued that criminal behavior was largely determined by biological traits and that some individuals were “born criminals” identifiable through physical characteristics.

An Austrian neurologist who developed psychoanalytic theory and argued that unconscious conflicts and early childhood experiences play a major role in shaping human behavior.

Proposed the masculinity hypothesis, arguing that as women gained greater social and economic equality, some would adopt traditionally masculine roles and behaviors, including increased participation in crime.

Argued that women’s involvement in crime increased as their access to legitimate opportunities expanded, a perspective often called the opportunity hypothesis.

Sociologist who argued that women commit as much crime as men but that much of it remains masked because women are more likely to conceal their offenses and receive lenient treatment from the criminal justice system.
