Plan Ahead

GMI matches mentors and students within a 7-hour time difference. Thinking ahead for scheduling is important to ensure that the schedule works for both mentor and student. Schedule all 10 sessions and get them on your calendar - it's always easier to reschedule a regular meeting than to schedule a new time at the end of each session.

Introduce Yourself

In the Mentor Resource Portal, there is an email template that you can use to introduce yourself to your student after you have received the initial introduction email from GMI. It's important for you to reply to that email introducing yourself. As a reminder you will have access to your Mentor Resource portal the week before your match date.

Use the mentor portal

Log in to the mentor portal and go through the resources that we have developed for you before your session. The better prepared you are, the more fruitful your session will be!

Be a GREAT Mentor

GMI appreciates all of our mentors who are volunteering their time. Here are some tips on how to be a GREAT Mentor:

  • Guide your student using the GMI approved resources.
  • Respond to their questions and concerns about the job search.
  • Engage with your student - ask a lot of questions! Practice active listening with your student.
  • Do not make early assumptions about your student.
  • Tailor your sessions to fit your student's needs - if you notice that they need to review something, go over it again!
The most successful mentorships involve mentors who are fully engaged and committed to the process. If you no longer have the time to commit to the sessions please contact us.

Use the Mentor Portal

The Mentor Portal contains all of the resources you will need to guide the different sessions as well as what the student sees on their portal. We recommend looking over the material prior to each session with your student. Once a session is marked as complete, the next session will unlock for you to review.

Sessions 9 and 10 wrap up the mentorship, providing tools on how your student can distinguish themselves in the workplace and how to work in a global environment.

Communication

GMI appreciates all of our mentors who are volunteering their time to assist students on their first career journey. If at any point you no longer have the time to commit to the sessions, please contact us.

Meet Regularly

We encourage you to meet with your student once a week, but the two of you can decide together what meeting schedule works best. Why weekly? We’ve found that long gaps between sessions can cause students to lose momentum. To keep the experience meaningful and consistent, all mentorships must be completed within 10 months of the match date.
