School

day 1 : polar bears and fishes

To break the ice on day 1, the teachers organized an activity in which we had to break a code. We made groups of four and every group had three dice. We had to throw the dice and the teachers would tell us the number of polar bears and fish we had. After that, each group had to find out how the teachers would come up with that. In the end, two groups had the solution after a hint of the teachers.

Here, there are six bears and six fish. So how does it work ? The hint was that bears make groups to fish around holes in the ice and they wait around it. The solution is that when there is a dot in the middle, all the dots around it are polar bears necause the dot in the center represents an ice hole. So there are two bears on the 3 and four bears on the 5. The fish are under the hole so the number of fish is the number on the opposite side of the hole. So there four fish under the 3 and two under the 5. The 2 has no fish and no bears because it has no ice hole.

our experimentgaz flame

On Tuesday we made an experiment with gaz . When you put a match to it the gaz (Propane) reacts to the oxygen and forms a flame. In the test tube there are two forms of the gaz : Liquid and gazeous . You can see professor Meyer explains this like a master. Simon and Pierre-Yves

We split up into groups of three and prepared several experiments, which we will record in Germany, in order to make educational videos of those experiments.

The gas serpent

It was really cool, we did a mixture of liquid soap and glycerin, put it in a funnel joined with a bottle of gas and the bubbles appeared. I took the bubbles in my hand and Pia set my hand on fire with a match. I was scared the first time because it was hot, but the second time it was pure enjoyment. I liked putting Pia's hand on fire as well.

The chemical garden

The chemical garden is an experiment based on the mix of non-organic matter. Its name comes from the way it looks at the end the experiment.

How to do it

Step 1 : Put sodium silicate solution into a transparent container Step 2 : Put crystals of metal salts into it Step 3 : Wait for the garden to create

How it works

The ionic strength is higher in the sodium silicate solution than in the crystals. This will increase the pressure in the membrane and it will create a hole. The insides will go through the hole and will grow upwards. The shape and the color of the crystals will change depending on the crystals used. The most oftenly used ones are copper, iron and iron chloride.

Guide's explanation on how the radiotelescope works

France:

  • longer school days
  • fewer meals, but bigger lunch
  • fast paced classes
  • two school buildings with a lot of space

Differences between school in france and Germany

Germany:

  • shorter school days
  • more meals, but smaller lunch/ no lunch at school
  • slighly slower classes, but more exercises
  • 3 small school buildings with a lot less space

The french food

The French food is very tasty. At the top you can see photos of our journey to Bourges. The French food (gratin dauphinois, French cheese apple cake,...) in our families was delicious as well. The canteen of the high school was much better than in Germany.

We spent a lot of time in the Archevêché Garden !

To finish, we ate some snacks. Very nice day !

We rode a Merry-Go-Round... ... and a little guy joined us! (under the green cloud !)

vISIT IN BOURGES

Next, we went to the cathedral. It is so pretty !

On Wednesday afternoon, the whole group visited Bourges...

First, we ate in Quick because there was not enough room in the other fast food. Cheese !

And we are so pretty too ;)

Deutsches Museum : Food and Agriculture department

On Tuesday we travelled by train to the Deutsches Museum in Munich to see the department of food and agriculture. Part of our project was to understand the beer brewing process so we looked at a traditional two-vessel brewing system as well as the model of a brewery house. We had some information to find in order to fill in a worksheet about the brewing process, beer ingredients, the German Purity Law and transportation of beer barrels before the development of transportation.

Deutsches Museum : FREE VISIT

After looking closely at the brewing system we were lucky to have some time to explore the rest of the museum. Several impressive exhibitions were admired on various scientific topics such as sound and music, aeronautics and space.

Munich

After the Deutsches Museum, we went to visit the city centre of Munich with its impressive buildings and the beautiful Marienplatz. Plenty of shopping and fun were had!

RIEGELE BREWERY

On Wednesday, we continued to explore the brewing process by visiting the family-owned « Riegele Bräuhaus » in Augsburg. The brewery has the ability to fill 28,000 bottles per hour. That might seem like a lot but it’s actually much less than the bigger breweries. The copper machinery is very impressive and the smell of the hops, malt and yeast filled the entire place. At the end of our visit, the 16 year olds and above got to sample a small amount of beer straight from the barrel. The visit of the brewery complemented what we had learned the day before at the museum and we know everything we have to know about beer-making.

BAVARIAN LUNCH

After the visit, we ate a traditional Bavarian lunch with beer sausages, potato salad and pretzels. Riegele beer was on offer but many of us preferred drinking the infamous «Spezi », a mixture of cola and fizzy orange.

Spherification experiment

On Thursday morning, we started studying molecular cooking. We prepared "fake caviar" made out of alginate and red cabbage juice, then obtained different colours of pearls as we changed the pH of the liquid.

Maillard Reaction

On Friday, we explored the reaction between reducing sugars and aminoacids and tried to recognize the smell of different combinations. Now we know why bread smells so good !

Esterification and aromas

Our last experimental session was about esters and aromas. When you make an alcohol react with a carboxylic acid, it produces a molecule called an ester. You can find many esters in natural aromas, and we tried to identify them.

Sweet pictures !

A lot of fun was had by all during our trip and we enjoyed the perfect balance between educational activities, cultural discoveries and linguistic opportunities. The group of French and German students got on really well and it was a real pleasure to see them interact, work and laugh together. Erasmus is all about opening horizons, discovering new things and making amazing memories. Long live Erasmus! 🇪🇺
