Topic question: The effect of the emotions linked to singers who perform any of: musical theatre, art song, classical opera, contemporary, jazz, and choral/ choir.
Steps to do the right literature search: 1- Break down the topic into concepts 2- Search each concept for its controlled vocab(s) and keywords 3- Combine the different search strategy strings into one
Description
Step 1
Concepts are:
Concept 1= C1= music OR certain “genres of music”
Concept 2= C2= certain emotions affecting the singer
Concept 3= C3= Singing OR singers
This space is designed for you to briefly share what your course is about. What is the main topic? What will the user learn? Why should they be interested? You can use this section to hook from the start: present an attractive idea, highlight a benefit, or simply invite them to discover what comes next. Make it your own!
Step 2
Concept 1: Controlled Vocab / Indexed Terms
Controlled vocab or indexed terms= standardly written terms assigned by the database mapped to the articles that are talking about the concept and not just mentioning the term(s).
If we choose to explode, then automatically the narrower subject terms will be selected.
None of the narrower subject terms serve out topic, so we will opt out of exploding. So, to add this subject term without exploding we click on “Add to search” button. The term appears in the search box with DE before the term and the term with straight quotations which represents the subject term syntax in PsycINFO.
However, under “Related terms” the subject “Music Perception” seems relevant. With a + next to it, it indicates that there are narrower subjects, so to be able to check the subject tree, click on it.
If we explode “Music Perception” only one of the narrower subjects are relevant.
The relevant subject as we click on them to read their scope was “Musical Pitch” unexploded.
Another relevant subject term “Pitch Perception” which was narrower to “Musical Pitch”. Its narrower subject terms “Amusia” and “Pitch Discrimination” are not relevant.
Also, another related subject terms “Vocalization” and “Voice”.
Step 2
Concept 1: Keywords
After searching the subjects of this concept, now it is time to add the relevant keywords.

Truncation (*) The asterisk at the end of the root of the word * indicates continuation of the word. For example, pollut* will give the following variety of the word: pollute OR pollutes OR polluted OR polluting OR pollution OR pollutant OR pollutants, without me having to type them. BE CAREFUL of using short root words for example, if your topic is about kid meaning child, DO NOT use kid* instead type kid OR kids, because kid* will give kid OR kids OR kidney OR kidneys, with kidney OR kidneys being irrelevant, hence creating noise in the number of results retrieved.
Quotations ("") “Quotations” indicate the same order of words. Quotations are not used, there is a hidden AND Boolean operator which indicated both words should be there both next to each other or not next to each other, hence creating an increased unneeded number of results.
Field Searches Field searches are another means to decrease or increase your search for the keywords and not the subject terms. You can look for the mentioning of the keywords in the Title only, OR title and abstract, or all text, etc.
Step 2
Concept 1: Controlled Vocab / Indexed Terms & Keywords TOGETHER Booleans Operators: OR Similar concepts are ORed to create an increased number of results.
First concept is now searched with the formula: (CV C1 OR KW C1)
with
CV= Controlled Vocab(s)/ Indexed term(s)
KW= Keyword(s)
C1= Concept 1
resulting in the following search string: DE "Music Perception" OR DE "Pitch Perception" OR DE "Musical Pitch" OR DE "Vocalization" OR DE "Voice" OR XB (music* OR vocal* OR voice OR Opera OR Jazz OR choral OR choir OR chorus OR (contemporary AND genre) OR acoustic* OR "Art song*")
The keyword terms appear in the search box with XB the parenthesis indicating searching for the keywords in the title OR abstract as PsycINFO syntax.
Concept 2 & Concept 3
Similarly, the emotions concept is searched for both subjects and keywords. The formula is: (CV C2 OR KW C2) with CV= Controlled Vocab(s)/ Indexed term(s)
KW= Keyword(s)
C2= Concept 2
yielding: DE "Passion" OR DE "Emotional Contagion" OR DE "Stress" OR DE "Desire" OR DE "Anger" OR DE "Anger Expression" OR DE "Hostility" OR DE "Sadness" OR XB (accomplish* OR Happy OR Excited OR Sad OR Sadness OR Melancholy OR Mad OR Madness OR Angry OR Anger OR Relaxed OR Calm* OR tranquil OR serenity OR Peace* OR Anxiety OR Anxious OR Worried OR Worrisome OR Passion*" OR Sensual OR Desire* OR Stress* OR Surprised OR Astonished)
The singing concept is searched for both subjects and keywords. The formula is: (CV C3 OR KW C3)
with
CV= Controlled Vocab(s)/ Indexed term(s)
KW= Keyword(s)
C3= Concept 3
yielding: DE "Singing" OR XB (sing OR singing)
Step 3
Combining the different concepts Booleans Operators: AND Different concepts are ANDed ensuring getting BOTH concepts in the results.
The formula is: (CV C1 OR KW C1) AND (CV C2 OR KW C2) AND (CV C3 OR KW C3)
with
CV= Controlled Vocab(s)/ Indexed term(s)
KW= Keyword(s)
C1= Concept 1
C2= Concept 2
C3= Concept 3
yielding: (DE "Music Perception" OR DE "Pitch Perception" OR DE "Musical Pitch" OR DE "Vocalization" OR DE "Voice" OR XB (music* OR vocal* OR voice OR Opera OR Jazz OR choral OR choir OR chorus OR (contemporary AND genre) OR acoustic* OR "Art song*")) AND (DE "Passion" OR DE "Emotional Contagion" OR DE "Stress" OR DE "Desire" OR DE "Anger" OR DE "Anger Expression" OR DE "Hostility" OR DE "Sadness" OR XB (accomplish* OR Happy OR Excited OR Sad OR Sadness OR Melancholy OR Mad OR Madness OR Angry OR Anger OR Relaxed OR Calm* OR tranquil OR serenity OR Peace* OR Anxiety OR Anxious OR Worried OR Worrisome OR Passion*" OR Sensual OR Desire* OR Stress* OR Surprised OR Astonished)) AND (DE "Singing" OR XB (sing OR singing))
Check it on PsycINFO
Parenthesis () are necessary when you have a mixture of Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT). It forces the databases to search each concept as one entity, then AND the different concepts together.
Removing DE “Vocalization” OR DE “Voice”, and the keywords vocal* OR voice*
(DE "Music Perception" OR DE "Pitch Perception" OR DE "Musical Pitch" OR XB (music* OR Opera OR Jazz OR choral OR choir OR chorus OR (contemporary AND genre) OR acoustic* OR "Art song*")) AND (DE "Passion" OR DE "Emotional Contagion" OR DE "Stress" OR DE "Desire" OR DE "Anger" OR DE "Anger Expression" OR DE "Hostility" OR DE "Sadness" OR XB (accomplish* OR Happy OR Excited OR Sad OR Sadness OR Melancholy OR Mad OR Madness OR Angry OR Anger OR Relaxed OR Calm* OR tranquil OR serenity OR Peace* OR Anxiety OR Anxious OR Worried OR Worrisome OR Passion*" OR Sensual OR Desire* OR Stress* OR Surprised OR Astonished)) AND (DE "Singing" OR XB (sing OR singing))
