Clubfoot is a condition where a babys foot/hand is twisted out of its normal position.

What causes it?

• Some birth defects happen because of genes passed down from parents.
• Environmental factors like smoking,drinking alcohol, drug use and inhaling harmful chemials can cause clubfoot/hand when the mother is pregnant with the baby.
• There are also unknown causes, during the babys development in the womb but sometimes the exact cause is unknown.

How is it diagnosed?

Clubfoot/hand are diagnosed by doctors examining the baby hands or feet. Sometimes they an be seen before birth using an ultrasound and doctors may also use an x-ray after birth to look at the bones. Doctors also check for other genetic or other muscle conditions that can sometimes occur along with clubfoot.

Symptoms

• The foot is turned inward and downward.
• The heel may look shorter than the other foot
• The foot may be stiff and hard to move into the normal position.
