Navate laterali

Internamente la basilica è divisa in navate ( in genere 3 più raramente 5 ) da 2 o più serie di colonne allineate.

Presbiterio

Infondo alla navata principale, di fronte all'abside è posto il Presbiterio ( dal latino tardo "presbyterium" collegio dei preti o degli anziani ) lo spazio riservato al Clero, solitamente rialzato da 3 o più gradini.

Quadriportico

Spazio di forma quadrata o rettangolare con un porticato perimetrale

Nartece

La porzione di porticato che corrisponde alla facciata della basilica è detta Nartece ( dal greco Narthex, scrigno )

Abside

L'abside è l'elemento architettonico terminale della navata principale di una chiesa, solitamente a pianta semicircolare o poligonale, coperto da una volta a catino.

Transetto

Il transetto nella basilica paleocristiana è un corpo architettonico trasversale che interseca perpendicolarmente le navate, solitamente tra la navata principale e l'abside, creando una forma simbolica a croce

Navata centrale

La navata centrale è solitamente più ampia e più alta delle laterali per consentire l'inserimento delle finestre in quella porzione di muratura che supera in altezza la copertura dell navate laterali.
