What is Big Data?

  • Large and hard to understand datasets.
  • These data sets can be used to reveal patterns, trends, and associations.
  • The data can sometimes be:
-organized -semi-organized -unorganized

Big Data Examples

Big data can help us to predict disease and identify high-risk patients

Big data can be used to analyze large amounts of information like:

Puting it into practice

  • Big data allows for large data sets to be analyzed to identify patterns and trends in patient health, treatments, and diseases.
- This shows trends and helps guide decisions in practice.- Similar to sepsis alerts tracking vital signs and labs.
  • When data is shared using interoperability, it allows for more healthcare systems to be connected and share data
- This helps to keep patients safer and improve outcomes by having access to all of their charts and past medical history- Allowing hospitals to data from others, can help with alerting the new hospitals for falls, allergies, sepsis, etc.
  • Massachusets General Hospital has put together a program to help prepare the future workforce for this by tackling the challenges and implementing change.

References

  • Healthcare providers can analyze large data sets from the EHR and look at patient histories.
  • This can help the provider identify trends and patterns individually in each patient.
  • This allows for earlier treatment and improved patient outcomes.
