What is your sustained investigation question? My question is about the different types of connections there are. For example, there is misconnection and disconnection with different relationships, and I wanted to do it with people around me as well as my culture and my life. Why did you choose to follow this theme for your portfolio? As I went through senior year, I started realizing there were a lot of things in my life and I just wanted to put that on paper. I started to realize how much I value those connections and a lot of my life comes down to the interactions with people that I have. How do the art pieces on display answer your sustained investigation question? The art pieces that I specifically picked are related to my culture and the interactions that I have with my culture. I think that a lot of cultures are connected to each other in a way, especially Asian cultures. Being around Coppell has opened me to so many things like going to Heritage Night, which has also really opened my eyes to different cultures that I see. What part of this artwork are you most proud of? I am most proud of the way that I conveyed my message with the materials that I used. It was the first time I have ever used clay in my life on a canvas, so it is just fun to experiment with those things and just try out new materials. What technical methods or processes did you use to create the pieces? I experimented a lot this time. For one of my pieces, I used plexiglass and I drew it on top of it, and I also put nails and wood and stuff, and I was doing a lot of random stuff just to convey my message, but also just kind of like work around what I wanted to do. Then I also use paint a lot of the time because I like the way I can express how I feel through paint.

What is your sustained investigation question? My sustained investigation question is dealing with solitude and solace and the balance between those. How does this art piece on display answer your sustained investigation question? My art pieces answer my question in an interesting way I would say because if you look at them, most of them do not tell a solid story. There is pretty confusing symbolism in a lot of them. This piece specifically is shrouded in a lot of symbols that are hard to decipher, but I feel like those who can relate to what I went through, with time will understand what I am showing in my pieces. What message or feelings do you want the viewer to experience? When most people look at my art, I think a lot of them are blinded by the bright colors. That has been a theme throughout this portfolio. I have been trying to push the hues that I am working with, however, as I said before, those who have gone through a similar process that I have would understand that there is more to the bright colors. What part of this artwork are you most proud of? The part that I am most proud of in this artwork is probably the portrait. It is something that I was not initially happy with. I actually painted it three times until I ended up in a spot where it was OK. What was the most challenging part of creating this artwork? The most challenging part was actually planning it all out. This piece has to deal with a particular story. So, before I even started sketching it out visually, I was actually writing a lot about the story of the cardinal that you see in the piece.

What is your sustained investigation question? My investigation question was how did finding happiness affect my personality and environment. Why did you choose to follow this theme for your portfolio? I was really interested in the theme of happiness, particularly because I enjoyed The Little Prince, the novel, so I wanted it to be inspired by that theme. How do the art pieces on display answer your sustained investigation question? My first artwork, the one with the blue canvas, was my first artwork for my portfolio. It represented myself not being able to find the happiness that was close to me because of the situation I was in. This is represented by the position that I was in the artwork. For my second artwork, it has a big guilty print, and it is my past selves reflecting on my present self. They are accusing me of being happy because they are not familiar with the new feeling. What message or feelings do you want the viewer to experience? I want them to feel connected to the artwork and kind of relate to it because happiness is a feeling that everyone experiences, hopefully, in their lives. What technical methods or processes did you use to create your artworks? For my first piece, I mixed modeling paste and acrylic to kind of layer on the paintings to create a swirl, which was a pretty fun method to do. For my second artwork with the line art, I splattered watercolor to create a splatter effect to represent the growing joy in my life.

What is your sustained investigation question? My sustained investigation question is how can the musicality of daily life be represented. Why did you choose to follow this theme for your portfolio? I wanted to explore how sound can be translated into a visual medium because both are something that are really important to me and I wanted to see how they can interplay. How do the art pieces on display answer your sustained investigation question? One of my displayed art pieces is about the sound of an alarm clock waking you up in the morning, and I show that as a reference to the painting, The Creation of Adam. I have me reaching out to open or snooze an alarm clock. The other one is me sitting in a quiet theater waiting for the movie to begin. It is the sound of silence, which is something that I wanted to try to convey as well. What message or feelings do you want the viewer to experience? A sense of calm is what I am going for because listening to music and listening to the sounds of nature is something that really calms me, so I want to convey that in most of my pieces. I do have one or two pieces where I am conveying an aggravating sound but overall calm. What was the most challenging part of creating this artwork? After a while, coming up with different ideas is the most challenging because you get so used to your own topic and you kind of knock out the ideas you had right at the beginning of the year. After that, it is like digging deeper into it and learning more about yourself along the way, and I just kind of love that process.
