Temples

Some areas in Sumerian cities are nicer than others. Here are districts to avoid according to our travellers. In the end, you may think there is nowhere you can stay in Sumerian cities! It is not so bad: Sumerian cities are vast and there are many simple residential districts away from temples, markets and canals. Most houses we recommend are in these areas.

Building sites

Building sites

The kings of Ur undertook a vast (re)construction policy all over Sumer, so that there are many ongoing construction sites in all cities. There is no advance warning for a building site: a team of workers will just show up one morning and start! This is true for both monumental buildings and private houses. Don’t blame your hosts for the inconvenience!

The only thing you can do is to check favourable and unfavourable days to undertake building or repairing works: a register is available to all in the main temple or in administrative centres.

Canals

Staying close to a canal does not mean you can bathe every day! In general, canals are not clean, especially during the dry season. Moreover, they stink, and the canal banks are paradises for insects, especially mosquitoes.
