The Olive Branch Petition
The Olive Branch Petition was written on July 5, 1775 by Continental Congress member, John Dickinson. In 1775, the Colonist believed their true enemey was Parliment, who imposed the taxes, not the king. In the petition, Dickinson aimed to ease tension between the Colonists and King George III and ask the king to address colonial greivances.
John Dickinson’s Letters from a Colonial Farmer in Pennsylvania
John Dickinson wrote “Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania” in 1767 and 1768. In the letters, Dickinson codemns British taxation of the colonies but does not call for full-blown independence.
The Olive Branch Petition
Becuase of the Qaurtering Act of 1774, the Founders believed that no troops should not be quartered in the homes of American citizens. This right became enshrined after the Revolutionary War when the United States formed its official government under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
The Marbleheaders, an elite and racially diverse group of men from Massachusetts formed America's makeshift navy. This group successfully escaped impressment from the British navy and remained pivotal to American campaigns like Washingon's crossing of the Delaware.
The Rights of Colonists
In 1772, Samuel Adams of Massachusetts drafted a declaration of the rights of the colonists as men, as Christians, and as subjects of the British Crown. This document is commonly known as The Rights of Colonists. In the document, Adams outlines the rights to which the colonists believed they were entitled.
On April 19, 1775, the 'shot heard round the world,' began the American Revolution. Officialy known as the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the Patriot fight against British troops was a direct result of increased miliatry presence in the colonies.
The Constitution of Virginia, June 29, 1776
The Virginia Constitution of 1776 was one of the first written in America. George Mason was the primary author. It was created as a response to the destruction of royal charters by King George III. The constitution established a republican government and created three branches of government. Virginia also adopted the Virginia Declaration of Rights a pre-cursor to the Bill of Rights.
Constitution of Pennsylvania September 28, 1776
The Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776 was also written in response to the end of colonial charters by King George III. Primarily written by Benjamin Franklin, the Pennsylvania Constitution was heavily influenced by popular sovereignty and equality. The state created frequent elections, freedom of religion, speech, assembly, trial by jury, and due process, and enfranchisement for non-property owning white men.
The Massachusetts Governement Act
The Massachusetts Government Act was the second Intolerable Act enacted on the Colonists as a response to the Boston Tea Party. Grievance 1 of the Declaration of Independence is a direct response to the Massachusetts Government Act of 1774.
The Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga was a signigicant American win that provided enough confidence in the cause for independence to secure treaties of alliance and trade with French. Throughout the war, French officers like the Comte de Rochambeau and the Marquis de Lafayette were pivotal French allies that led to British surrender at Yorktown.

John Adams and the Boston Massacre Trial
In 1770, prominent Massachusetts lawyer, John Adams defended the British soldiers accused of firing the first shots of the Boston Massacre. The Boston Massacre Trial demonstrates colonists adhering to their rule of law before the Administration of Justice Intolerable Act.
After the Declaration of Independence, the Colonists created their own form of government, the Articles of Confederation, in repsonse to cutting themselves off from British rule. The Articles created an association of sovereign states with a weak central government and no power to regulate commerce, or tax.
James Otis
James Otis was a leader of the Patriot movement in Boston. During the 1760s, Otis led the intellectual attack against British tyranny, composing ringing defenses of liberty that won Americans to the revolutionary cause and helped to inspire the well-known slogan, “No taxation without representation.”
Who was Patrick Henry?
Patrick Henry was a leading rebellious voice in the fight for independence. He served in Virginia's House of Burgesses and in both the First and Second Continental Congress. His famous phrase, "Give me liberty or give me death," is remembered as a battle cry of the American Revolution.
The First Continental Congress
In direct opposition to Bristish law, the Colonists summond a group of delegates from each colony forming the First Contitnental Congress in 1774. The First Continental Congress drafted the Declaration and Resolves of the First Continental Congress on October 14, 1774. In the document, the Colonists protested the Intolerable Acts and outlined their rights as men and British subjects.
Thomas Paine's Common Sense argued against the British government and military stating that the colonists were already at war, could build a comparable navy, and should ultimaetely support the call for independence.
John Hancock, Sam Adams, and the Sons of Liberty
Around 1768, John Hancock, a prominent Massachusetts merchant, lost his ship Liberty to the British government. In retallion, he joined Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty played a critical role in the events leading up to the American Revolution like the Battle of Lexington and Concord.
The Battle of Fallen Timbers
The Battle of Fallen Timbers demonstrates how contentious relationships between Americans and Native Americans persisted even after the Revolututionary War. The Treaty of Paris that ended the war, ceded the British Northwest Territory (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin) to the Americans. However, Native American nations resisted this American expansion into their land. It ended with the Treaty of Greenville (1795), which forced Native Americans to give up much of present‑day Ohio.

The Olive Branch Petition
The Olive Branch Petition was written on July 5, 1775 by Continental Congress member, John Dickinson. In 1775, the Colonist believed their true enemey was Parliment, who imposed the taxes, not the king. In the petition, Dickinson aimed to ease tension between the Colonists and King George III and ask the king to address colonial greivances.
John Dickinson’s Letters from a Colonial Farmer in Pennsylvania
John Dickinson wrote “Letters from a Farmer in Pennsylvania” in 1767 and 1768. In the letters, Dickinson codemns British taxation of the colonies but does not call for full-blown independence.
The Olive Branch Petition
Becuase of the Qaurtering Act of 1774, the Founders believed that no troops should not be quartered in the homes of American citizens. This right became enshrined after the Revolutionary War when the United States formed its official government under the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
The Marbleheaders, an elite and racially diverse group of men from Massachusetts formed America's makeshift navy. This group successfully escaped impressment from the British navy and remained pivotal to American campaigns like Washingon's crossing of the Delaware.
The Rights of Colonists
In 1772, Samuel Adams of Massachusetts drafted a declaration of the rights of the colonists as men, as Christians, and as subjects of the British Crown. This document is commonly known as The Rights of Colonists. In the document, Adams outlines the rights to which the colonists believed they were entitled.
On April 19, 1775, the 'shot heard round the world,' began the American Revolution. Officialy known as the Battle of Lexington and Concord, the Patriot fight against British troops was a direct result of increased miliatry presence in the colonies.
The Constitution of Virginia, June 29, 1776
The Virginia Constitution of 1776 was one of the first written in America. George Mason was the primary author. It was created as a response to the destruction of royal charters by King George III. The constitution established a republican government and created three branches of government. Virginia also adopted the Virginia Declaration of Rights a pre-cursor to the Bill of Rights.
Constitution of Pennsylvania September 28, 1776
The Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776 was also written in response to the end of colonial charters by King George III. Primarily written by Benjamin Franklin, the Pennsylvania Constitution was heavily influenced by popular sovereignty and equality. The state created frequent elections, freedom of religion, speech, assembly, trial by jury, and due process, and enfranchisement for non-property owning white men.
The Massachusetts Governement Act
The Massachusetts Government Act was the second Intolerable Act enacted on the Colonists as a response to the Boston Tea Party. Grievance 1 of the Declaration of Independence is a direct response to the Massachusetts Government Act of 1774.
The Battle of Saratoga
The Battle of Saratoga was a signigicant American win that provided enough confidence in the cause for independence to secure treaties of alliance and trade with French. Throughout the war, French officers like the Comte de Rochambeau and the Marquis de Lafayette were pivotal French allies that led to British surrender at Yorktown.

John Adams and the Boston Massacre Trial
In 1770, prominent Massachusetts lawyer, John Adams defended the British soldiers accused of firing the first shots of the Boston Massacre. The Boston Massacre Trial demonstrates colonists adhering to their rule of law before the Administration of Justice Intolerable Act.
After the Declaration of Independence, the Colonists created their own form of government, the Articles of Confederation, in repsonse to cutting themselves off from British rule. The Articles created an association of sovereign states with a weak central government and no power to regulate commerce, or tax.
James Otis
James Otis was a leader of the Patriot movement in Boston. During the 1760s, Otis led the intellectual attack against British tyranny, composing ringing defenses of liberty that won Americans to the revolutionary cause and helped to inspire the well-known slogan, “No taxation without representation.”
Who was Patrick Henry?
Patrick Henry was a leading rebellious voice in the fight for independence. He served in Virginia's House of Burgesses and in both the First and Second Continental Congress. His famous phrase, "Give me liberty or give me death," is remembered as a battle cry of the American Revolution.
The First Continental Congress
In direct opposition to Bristish law, the Colonists summond a group of delegates from each colony forming the First Contitnental Congress in 1774. The First Continental Congress drafted the Declaration and Resolves of the First Continental Congress on October 14, 1774. John Hancock, Sam Adams, and the Sons of Liberty
Around 1768, John Hancock, a prominent Massachusetts merchant, lost his ship Liberty to the British government. In retallion, he joined Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty played a critical role in the events leading up to the American Revolution like the Battle of Lexington and Concord.
The Battle of Fallen Timbers
The Battle of Fallen Timbers demonstrates how contentious relationships between Americans and Native Americans persisted even after the Revolututionary War. The Treaty of Paris that ended the war, ceded the British Northwest Territory (Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin) to the Americans. However, Native American nations resisted this American expansion into their land. It ended with the Treaty of Greenville (1795), which forced Native Americans to give up much of present‑day Ohio.
