What is the SAMR Framework?

Introduction

The SAMR framework was designed from an educational technology standpoint to consider the technology itself as a component that influences learning. In contrast to other approaches that view technology as a disruptor or already integrated into the classroom, the SAMR framework provides a way of flexibility with navigating the new technology.

Info
Customization

Why the SAMR Framework?

The versatility of artificial intelligence as a tool seems to know no bounds, regardless of the context of discipline that it's being used in. The SAMR framework creates better guidance for tackling this.

Address the technology

Other attempts try to adapt the idea of learning around the technology, not the technology for learning. The SAMR framework considers AI as a technology, just another medium for learning to occur.

Allows for flexibilty

The joint task force of MLA-CCCC suggested that instructors use technology within their comfort level. The SAMR framework creates guidance for this.

The SAMR Framework

SubstitutionTechnology acts as a substitute for doing something, but it does not change learning.

This particular framework works to discuss and anticipate how technology in general, not just AI, might be considered or accounted for when designing education experiences. It doesn't replace actual learning.

Augmentation Technology when swapped with tradational methods, with improved outcomes and engagement with learning.

ModificationA learning task is redesigned using technology.

RedefintionTechnology is used in a way previously not thought possible.

What does this look like students?

For students:

For a student, the SAMR framework is limited to the enhancement section of the SAMR framework. This includes the substitution and augmentation sections of the framework. If students are allowed to use AI, after checking with their instructors and the course syllabi, then the goal of AI usage should not be to offload all the heavy cognitive lifting, but rather to use it to supplement and jumpstart research.

Info
Not changing the actual learning task

Subsitution

Purposely not going out of the way to use AI tools to change how learning or the process occurs. Using specific tools to supercharge internet searching in place of completely cognitively offloading (e.g., built-in AI search results and overviews).

AI Tools are already integrated into current processes

Microsoft has integrated Co-Pilot, its AI agent, into all its software and is leveraging it when writing or creating research. Apple has Apple Intelligence, etc.

Consider it another source that you use in research.

When it is used, AI should be cited just like any other source in MLA format. AI is just another tool you use to construct your paper, not a replacement.

Enhances the learning task.

Augmentation

Using an AI tool like Perplexity or Claude to help determine possible keyword combinations after you have done some rudimentary background research on a subject.

Drawing out further connections between lines of inquiry.

After identifying a possible research focus, going back and forth with an AI tool to narrow a topic and put qualifiers on it further, but not having it do a lot of the heavy lifting.

Summarizing key ideas from difficult readings.

Cite it when used, but it can be used to help understand difficult passages in research.

Knowledge Check

Knowledge Check

What does this look like for instructors?

For instructors:

Use your best judgment and decide what aligns with your course outcomes.

The SAMR framework provides more adaptability than something like Bloom's taxonomy. It considers the technology itself, not just the process of learning. While the other two aspects of the framework, substitution and augmentation, are relevant, the most important parts of modification and redefinition are the most important pieces that instructors should consider.

Info
The need to have clear definitions and expectations.

Modify

Since modification actually considers how it changes learning and outcomes, there needs to be clear expectations and rules associated with how AI should function and be used. This also aligns with guidance put forth by the joint task force of MLA-CCCC.

Use it as a tool to demonstrate examples as a way to illustrate ownership and authorship.

Using AI as part of the idea generation process of the writing process, not offloading cognitive ability or ideas of authorship (it’s a tool, nothing more).

How does it change the relationship between the reader and the writer?

Have class discussions on how AI uses changes expectations between students and teachers as a gateway to larger discussions between writers and readers.

Integrating it into the classroom and learning processes.

Redefintion

MLA-CCCC suggests that teachers could integrate AI into their classes based on their comfort levels. The SAMR allows the flexibility and freedom to design that level of integration based on the other principles of the framework to facilitate that creation.

Emphasize goal outcomes and use them as teaching examples and class discussion, nothing more.

AI is capable of generating various teaching examples and illustrating aspects of course concepts for discussion, focusing more on the ethical considerations of research rather than the practical.

Be wary of the “fully automated loop” of teaching.

Just as educators did with multimodality in the 2010s, educators and librarians have the same conversations in the classroom about how AI tools are shaping the conversations and uses, what is considered, and what is lost, even if students are not allowed to use them.

Conclusion

The ever-evolving nature of AI makes it difficult to pinpoint an exact approach. Research has come up recently discussing the negative drawbacks of it with cognitive decline; however, Big Tech and companies continue to force the integration of AI tools whether users want it or not. Education is caught between a rock and a hard place. Considering the SAMR framework allows instructors to find flexibility and autonomy that balance a clear division of labor and respect concerns of AI in an uncertain world.

Bring your creation to life with animation. It's impossible not to pay attention to moving content!

Disciplines like Visual Thinking facilitate visually rich note-taking thanks to the use of images, graphics, infographics, and simple drawings. Go for it!

Basic Concepts

  • We are visual beings. We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.
  • Narrative beings. We tell thousands and thousands of stories. ⅔ of our conversations are stories.
  • Social beings. We need to interact with each other. We learn collaboratively.
  • Digital beings. We avoid being part of the content saturation in the digital world.
  • Creative beings. Fun is needed for creativity, creativity for innovation, innovation for success... Fun is success.
  • Exploring beings. We turn visual communication into an experience when we add interactivity, animation, and storytelling.

Technology does not carry an ascribed value:

  • The values, either positive or negative, as the value is given only by the users.
  • This is similar to how Jacques Derrida saw language and his concept of différance, where language is fluid, constantly shifting, and taking on different meanings based on context and interpretation. Writing and research functions similarly.
  • AI exists in a similar state, and the SAMR framework gives opporunity to discover meaning.

Did you know... We retain 42% more information when content is in motion? It's perhaps the most effective resource for capturing the attention of your audience.

Basic Concepts

  • We are visual beings. We are capable of understanding images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

  • Creative beings. Fun is needed for creativity, creativity for innovation, innovation for success... Fun is success.
  • Explorer beings. We turn visual communication into an experience when we add interactivity, animation, and storytelling.

Pro Tip: Interactivity is the key to capturing the interest and attention of your audience. A genially is interactive because your audience explores and engages with it.

With this feature... You can add additional content that excites the minds of your audience: videos, images, links, interactivity... Whateveryou want!

  • Plan the structure of your communication.
  • Prioritize and give visual weight to the main points.
  • Define secondary messages with interactivity.
  • Establish a flow throughout the content.
  • Measure the results.

  • It is clear and structured
  • Tells stories hierarchically.
  • Matches your audience.
  • Adapts fonts and color to the theme.
  • Includes images and entertains.
  • Represents data with graphics.
  • Uses timelines.
  • Is animated and interactive.
  • Excites the brain through multimedia elements.
  • DOES NOT exceed with bullet points 🙃.

Using AI to influence course content and learning objectives:

  • AI can be used to create examples and points of class discussion
  • A good way to show how course content regarding research, ethics, and AI could transfer beyond the classroom
  • Still gives instructors autonomy in deciding how and what ways (if any) to incorporate AI.

  • There is no replacement for the experiences and perspectives you bring to the writing process.
  • AI is capable of making the deep connections and ideas that a human can.
  • Writing and research are not about the end product; it's the process.
  • Learning does not occur or cannot be measured by letting AI do all the work for you.
