DISCOVER THE ARTWORKS
The work, a famous oil on canvas depicting everyday objects in surreal proportions within a room, is one of the most important in the Californian museum's collection. The painting is renowned for its ability to evoke strangeness and ambiguity, transforming common elements into a dreamlike and disproportionate context.
The work represents a minimalist interior with a door open directly onto the sea, capturing the light and silence typical of the artist's style. It is considered one of Hopper's most enigmatic and metaphysical works, where the contrast of light and the geometric composition create a sense of expectation and isolation.
Vincent's Bedroom in Arles is the name of three paintings by the Dutch painter, created between 1888 and 1889 and housed respectively at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. The painting depicts Vincent's bedroom in the "yellow house" in Arles, where the artist had taken refuge in the hope of establishing a studio for avant-garde painters.
The work is part of the artist's "Interiors" series, characterized by his iconic Ben-Day dots and a pop style that depicts a domestic setting with a city view in the background. Preparatory versions (collages or studies) of this series also exist, but the main work usually referred to by this title is the one in the New York museum.
