Hello, my brilliant Fine Arts Apprentices, and welcome to Episode 3 of the Music Matters Podcast! Last week, we took a closer look at the listening strategy...TUNE. And tried it out together.
I wonder..What did you notice this week while you were "Tuning In" to the things around you? Did you hear anything interesting? Did you hear some sounds that made you feel different than others?
Remember... T is for...Take a Minute U....Use your Ears N...is for Notice E....Explain

Oh my! I am on the edge of my seat! What song was this? It sounds so interesting! I simply must know. What did it mean? How did it make you feel? I am intrigued!
Well…You know… It is intriguing… So why don’t I play it for you and see if it sounds familiar to you. I bet you have heard it before!
As the notes became more clear... I recognized it. It was a glorious song that, for as long as I can remember, has meant one thing…
Oh. I bet they will. They have probably heard it a million and 13 times…but... I wonder if they have ever really noticed it before…
At first, I felt a little uncertain because I was not sure what I was hearing or where it was coming from. Then the sound began to take shape. I started to hear that it was actually a song.
Terrific, I thought y’all might… And that is why we are going to talk more about how sounds can make us feel in todays episode.
Let me tell you about my TUNE-in adventure. You see, there I was, trying to take a nap on Sunday afternoon, when all of a sudden I heard a sound.. .
Oh, Professor, I can tell you that I definitely heard some sounds that made me feel different than others… .
Yes! Please! I bet our apprentices are excited to hear it too! I bet some of them will recognize it!
You know… In music when a sound gets louder and louder we call that a CRESCENDO!
I see what you're saying… They may not have... "TUNED IN" to it before!!
It was not very loud at first. It sounded like it was far away. But then it kept getting louder and louder…
Ahhh, yes! You are right! So the sound began to CRESCENDO as it got closer and closer.
Exactly. So why don’t we make sure to "TUNE IN" while we listen to it!
Fabulous idea! Go ahead and start the recording! Apprentices, make sure to "TUNE IN" as you listen!

Oh, how interesting! So... I thought of the ice cream truck, but you thought of a fiddle tune. Isn’t it amazing that music and sounds can remind us of things we have experienced before? And sometimes the very same sound can hold different meanings and memories for different people.
I felt excited because my ears and my brain recognized the song. It was “Turkey in the Straw,” the song played by the ice cream truck!!! And Oh! Professor, I do love ice cream!!!
Oh! Delightful! Play it for me and lets see! I wonder how the apprentices will feel about the fiddle version!
Hmmm…I am perplexed! I know that song... I recognized it… It sounded so familiar.. but I couldn’t quite remember where I had heard it… I noticed I felt excited too. Tell me what was that song? .
Well of course! I just love experiments! What do you have in mind?
Well…It sounds like your experience was similar to mine. You see, before my brain could even form a thought, I had a feeling.
It is...That makes me wonder…Hmmm….Say…Artemus… Are you up for a little "TUNE IN" experiment?
Well, I was wondering if the same tune might make you feel different when it is played as a fiddle tune.
OH! Yummy! Yum! Yum!! I love ice cream too. But you know… Now that you say it was a song that the ice cream truck played.….
I do think I remember hearing that sound coming down my street and dashing to my piggy bank to fund my ice cream adventure..
But that isn’t what I remembered when I heard the recording… I remembered my very first barn dance and the first time I played my fiddle for an audience.
Oh! This is so exciting.. Apprentices..Listen carefully.. Don't forget to "TUNE IN!"
NOW PLAYING!!!! TUNE IN!!!

Me too! And boy, it sure is a very good song for dancing! Oh! What is this? It looks like one of our apprentices has a different version of this tune to share. Let’s listen and see how this version makes us feel and what it helps us remember... .
Hmm…. The fiddle version of the song, The Turkey in the Straw, was very different from the ice cream truck version I shared.
Oh this is getting more and more exciting. I cant wait to hear it! Apprentices... Don't forget to TUNE IN!
The fiddle version made me feel like I wanted to dance. I felt happy.

Oh!!! I remember singing that song! When I was just a young maestro in elementary school, we would sing that at recess when we wanted to sing silly songs. Such wonderful memories... .
And do you notice something interesting, Apprentices? “Do Your Ears Hang Low?” sounds a lot like “Turkey in the Straw,” but when you listen carefully, they are a little bit different. Which reminds me... .
I just think it's amazing how a tune can help us connect to different memories and feelings. I had almost forgotten how I felt when I used to sing it as a youngster.... Hearing it again made me feel like I was right back on the playground singing with my friends. .
Apprentices, I have a listening challenge for you! Head into the Listening Booth to begin...
