The system electronically maintains Records of Duty Status (RODS), eliminating the need for paper logbooks and reducing the storage of physical logs.
Automatic Driving Status:
The device must automatically switch to Driving status when vehicle motion is detected, but it will not automatically change to On-Duty, Sleeper Berth, or Off-Duty, which must be selected manually.
Warning Devices for Stopped Vehicles
3 reflective triangles 3 road flares *Must have at least one of the two warning devices. These must be visible at 500 feet in both daylight and darkness under normal conditions.
When to do it?
Before you ride out (Pre-trip)
Check for any equipment failures and review your last trip's post- trip inspection.
No issues? Then it's not required but still highly recommend
Class B
TITLE
Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. (Holders of a Class B license may, with any appropriate endorsements, operate all vehicles within Class C)
Often referred to as a logbook; records prepared by a driver truthfully and accurately reflecting his/her hours of service
Graph area: Off duty, sleeper berth, driving or on-duty status
10-Hour Off-Duty Requirement
10-Hour Off-Duty Rule: You must take 10 consecutive hours off duty before starting a new shift. This rest period fully resets your 11-hour driving and 14-hour on-duty limits.
Taking the full 10 hours ensures you’re rested, alert, and ready for the next day on the road.
Fail to appear for any test (except a pre-employment test) within a reasonable time, as determined by the employer, consistent with applicable DOT agency regulations, after being directed to do so by the employer/MRO

Cargo Tank >1000 gallons
✔ Based on clear signs of drug or alcohol use✔ Supervisor must be trained to identify symptoms✔ Can include appearance, behavior, speech, or smell
Being under the influence isn’t the only issue—appearing impaired can trigger a test.
Safety investigations may be initiated for a variety of reasons, and in some cases may occur without a specific triggering event.
Company name and mailing address
After your USDOT/MC application is completed, you will likely receive multiple phone calls, emails, and mail from companies offering services. While these are legitimate businesses, many charge excessive fees. Be cautious and do not feel pressured to purchase their services.
Assistance may be needed to develop a Corrective Action Plan and a Safety Management Plan to address any issues identified
Helps prevent drivers from hiding drug & alcohol violations
Pre-employment and annual queries required before operating a CMV
Driver consent required before conducting a query
Supports employer compliance with investigation and reporting rules
Passenger vehicle designed to carry 16 or more people including the driver

• Annual Clearinghouse Query
• Pre-employment MVR Motor Vehicle Report • Annual MVRs With no limit on frequency—check as often as you like!
An employer covered by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) drug & alcohol testing program is required to be registered with the Clearinghouse
The system totals driving hours and helps identify potential HOS violations before they occur, although drivers remain responsible for knowing and managing their available hours.
Initial Rule went into effect 1-6-2020:
Is a secure online database that gives employers, FMCSA, State Driver Licensing Agencies, and State law enforcement personnel real-time information about CDL driver drug and alcohol program violations
✔ Can happen any day, any time—even during off-hours✔ Must be unannounced and truly random✔ Includes both drug and alcohol tests
Refusing a random test is treated the same as failing one.
Fail to remain at the testing site until the testing process is complete
If FMCSA removes a violation erroneously entered in the Clearinghouse, the SDLA will be notified
SDLA must reinstate commercial driving privilege
SDLA to expunge the driving record accordingly
Remarks: What did you do (with city and state)
SDLA will receive notification of a driver’s Clearinghouse status
SDLA to pull information from the Clearinghouse
FMCSA to push a notification to the SDLA
Form 2290 Filing to IRS: $80 + $5 for each additional truck
IRS Fee: Based off weight and registration month
E-file Fee to IRS: $15
The device records location and miles traveled, which helps maintain compliance during IFTA audits. Drivers must still keep fuel receipts for proper documentation.
If using for route tracking for IFTA make sure the approprate reports are avalible for IFTA document retention
Fire Extinguisher
At least one UL-rated extinguisher of 5 B:C or two extinguishers of 4 B:C rating Must be fully charged, securely mounted, and readily accessible.
First-Aid Kit

how to report?
If you find any issues, log it.
If necessary, fix the defect. Whoever conducted the repair, or the next driver performing a pre-trip, must sign off to confirmed the repair was properly completed.
30-Minute Break Rule
30-Minute Break Rule: You must take a 30-minute break before reaching 8 hours of driving time to prevent fatigue and maintain focus.
This break can be taken off duty, in the sleeper berth, or on duty but not driving. It’s designed to give you a short reset before continuing your trip safely.
Is any person who operates (drives) any commercial motor vehicle, an owner operator is an employer
when to do it?
After your turn in (Post-trip)
Log any issues you experienced on the trail. A more thorough post-trip inspection will allow repairs to be conducted during your rest period.
No issues? Then it's not required but still highly recommend
All time waiting to be dispatched, all time inspecting, servicing, repairing, conditioning or in attendance of a CMV, all time loading, unloading or performing any other compensated work
Sleeper Berth Rule
Sleeper Berth Split Rule: You can split your 10-hour break using the sleeper berth rule. Spend at least 7 consecutive hours in the sleeper and take at least 2 more hours off duty or in the berth.
Both periods must total 10 hours and together they pause your 14-hour on-duty clock.
Is a secure online database that provides real-time information about CDL driver drug and alcohol program violations to employers, FMCSA, state licensing agencies, and law enforcement.
Bonus Tip
If it’s not logged, it didn’t happen. Always keep your ELD (Electronic Logging Device) updated and accurate. Proper logging protects you during inspections and proves compliance with FMCSA regulations.
My family moved to Peoria Arizona from Parkston South Dakota when I was in the Third Grade. In June 1993, I graduated from Peoria High School. Three days later I went to Marine Corps Bootcamp in San Diego, CA.
United States Marine Corps: (1993-1999) In June 1993, I completed Marine Corps Bootcamp in San Diego, CA. I became an infantry machine gunner stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC. While at Camp Lejeune, I was deployed to 19 countries over the course of 3 deployments. In October 1997, I was promoted to Sergeant(E-5). I transferred to the School of Infantry at Camp Pendleton, CA where I became a Marine Combat Training (MCT) Battalion Troop Handler and Infantry Weapons Instructor. I was honorably discharged from the Marine Corps to pursue a career in Law Enforcement.
Arizona Department of Public Safety: (2000-2020) In October of 2020 I retired from the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZ DPS) after serving over 20 years as a State Trooper. I conducted tens of thousands of traffic stops and Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections during my career. My last assignment was with the Commercial Motor Vehicle Special Enforcement Bureau serving the North District. During my career as an Arizona State Trooper, I conducted or assisted with the investigation of thousands of vehicle collisions. I investigated or assisted with the investigation of numerous complex multi-vehicle collisions involving serious or fatal injuries. Many of these collisions involved commercial motor vehicle(s) or chemical impairment. My wife and I decided we wanted to move to a Hobby Farm near Sioux Falls South Dakota. We now live on a small farm outside of Lennox.
Aladdin Transportation Services: (2021-Current)
Since October of 2021 I have been the Safety Manager at Aladdin. My team and I help companies maintain compliant Carrier Files as required by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulation. We also serve as a resource for our customers who have questions about the numerous rules and regulations commercial carriers are subject to. Not knowing the regulations is not an excuse for non-compliant carriers. We have helped many carriers succeed: many that were going to be put out of service before we stepped in to help.
Reflective Safety Vest
Why: Increases visibility when outside your truck. Tip: ANSI-approved vests are best for high visibility.
Emergency Food & Water
Why: Keeps you hydrated and nourished during delays. Tip: Pack non-perishable snacks and at least a gallon of water.
Your vehicle was built before 2000 Based on engines year
FMCSA will notify the SDLA when a driver completes the return-to-duty (RTD) requirements and is no longer prohibited
Class A
TITLE
Any combination of vehicles with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. (Holders of a Class A license may, with any appropriate endorsements, operate all vehicles within Class B and C)
School Bus
Employers will register and link their Clearinghouse with their Portal account
You use paper logs for 8 days or less in a rolling 30 days
Connection & Portability:
The device can connect to the vehicle’s ECM either through a hardwired connection or Bluetooth, and it must be portable as required by regulations. Acceptable devices include a cell phone, tablet, or laptop.
34-Hour Restart Rule
To reset your driving hours, you must take 34 consecutive hours off-duty with no driving or on-duty tasks. After completing the full 34 hours, your 7-day or 8-day clock resets, giving you a fresh start with your full allowable driving hours.
Sleeper Berth Split Exemption
Drivers may split their 10-hour rest into two periods: at least 7 hours in the sleeper berth and at least 2 hours either off-duty or in the sleeper. Together, the two breaks must total 10 hours.
If discovered during a safety audit:
- Failure to conduct a pre-employment full clearinghouse query is an acute violation
- Failure to conduct annual limited clearinghouse query is a critical violation
Short-Haul Exemption
Drivers operating within a 150 air-mile radius can use the short-haul exemption. They must return to their starting point within 14 hours, are not required to take a 30-minute break, and must still record total on-duty and driving time per HOS rules.
A group of employers who join together to administer DOT drug and alcohol testing programs
Licensed physicians who have been trained and certified to review the lab results and to validate whether a test is positive
Double/Triple Trailers
- Secure document storage maintained by Aladdin
- Stored for a minimum of 3 years as required by FMCSA
- Files are always available upon request
Set up and schedule your test Must ensure testing is conducted at the correct times (pre-employment, random, post-accident, etc.) Maintain testing records and results for a minimum of 5 years (positive, refusals, return-to-duty)
You must respond to the official letter you receive. Failure to respond could lead to the suspension of your operating authority.
Odometer read outs and total miles driven: Miles driven is not odometer readings
All time in the sleeper berth

✔ Scheduled by a Designated Employee Representative (D.E.R)✔ Must be observed✔ At least 6 tests in 12 months (can be more)✔ Can continue for up to 5 years
You won’t know when they’re coming—stay ready, stay compliant.
✔ Required before you perform any safety-sensitive duties or a new employer ✔ Applies to new hires and some drivers returning after a 30 day break in service
Must have a verified negative result before you can drive
Drivers can access only their own information using their own login.gov account to access the Clearinghouse
Total hours: Time spent in off duty, sleeper berth, driving or on-duty
All time not in the furtherance of commerce, can not benefit the carrier in any way
Creation of required FMCSA accounts:
- FMCSA Portal
- Clearinghouse
- Login.gov
Ongoing management and upkeep of FMCSA-required systems. The device can also track mileage and data that help monitor vehicle maintenance requirements, supporting timely service and safer vehicle operation.
Basic Tool Kit
Why: Allows for small repairs on the road. Tip: Include wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, and duct tape.
Startup & Diagnostics:
When the vehicle ignition is turned on, the device must power up automatically and perform at least a basic diagnostic check.
Class C
TITLE
Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that does not meet the definition of Class A or Class B, but that either is designed to transport 16 or more passengers including the driver, or is placarded for hazardous materials.

• Pre-employment Clearinghouse Query • Annual Clearinghouse Query • Pre-employment MVR Motor Vehicle Report • Annual MVRs With no limit on frequency—check as often as you like!
Form 2290 Filing to IRS: $80 + $5 for each additional truck IRS Fee: Based off weight and registration month E-file Fee to IRS: $15

Aladdin Transportation Services: (2021-Current) Since October of 2021 I have been the Safety Manager at Aladdin.

Sleeper Berth Split Exemption
Drivers may split their 10-hour rest into two periods: at least 7 hours in the sleeper berth and at least 2 hours either off-duty or in the sleeper. Together, the two breaks must total 10 hours.
If discovered during a safety audit:
Short-Haul Exemption
Drivers operating within a 150 air-mile radius can use the short-haul exemption. They must return to their starting point within 14 hours, are not required to take a 30-minute break, and must still record total on-duty and driving time per HOS rules.
A group of employers who join together to administer DOT drug and alcohol testing programs
Licensed physicians who have been trained and certified to review the lab results and to validate whether a test is positive
Double/Triple Trailers
