Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), is a sexually transmitted virus that can physically manifest as warts (low-risk HPV) or cause cervical cancer (high-risk HPV) (2). Most infections resolve on their own, but persistent infections are very dangerous.
1. HPV enters the basal cells of the cervix through micro-abrasions. 2. HPV inserts its DNA into the host genome, including the genes for the E6 and E7 oncoproteins (4). 3. These proteins get expressed and function to break down p53 and inactivate Rb (4).
Result?
Uncontrolled cell growth -> mutations accumulate!

Cervical cancer develops gradually
HPV, left unchecked, can progress to CIN I (2) CIN stands for Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (3). This is a measure of the relative number of abnormal cells growing in the cervical epithelium, usually caused by high-risk HPV (3). CIN grades the level of tissue depth these abnormal cells have invaded (3).
