Os investigadores analisaram 100 relatórios de grupo (de 2000 palavras cada) utilizando uma rubrica de avaliação específica. Além disso, realizaram uma análise de conteúdo aprofundada em 49 desses relatórios.
Foi desenvolvido um novo framework (quadro de análise) para identificar evidências concretas de capacidades e disposições para o pensamento crítico, bem como os desafios que os alunos enfrentam ao aplicá-lo.

Com base nos resultados, o estudo oferece sugestões práticas para professores universitários melhorarem as práticas de avaliação e superarem as barreiras que impedem os alunos de adquirir estas competências essenciais.
