Back up in the forest canopy, the margay hangs upside down from the branch of a tree. At first, it holds on with both of its back feet. Then, with no hesitation, it releases the grip of one paw. The margay is many metres above the ground, hanging by just one foot! A puma looks up from where it is hunting, observing the margay performing feats like an acrobat. Just then, the margay glimpses a young boa constrictor. In an awesome move, it catches the snake it its jaws. This cat is a fearsome predator!

A rich habitat
The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is home to thousands of different species. Kinkajous and coatis are among the reserve’s species of mammals. Hundreds of birds and butterflies call the reserve home. See-through glass frogs and black-speckled pit vipers are some of the reserve’s many amphibians and reptiles.
After its successful hunt, the margay scans its surroundings. It sits under the large, holey leaves of a Swiss cheese plant. It waits and watches. It doesn’t take long for a spider to appear… or for the margay to catch and eat it. But then the wild cat’s luck changes. Another spotted cat is lurking in the shadows… and this cat is no friend of the margay. It is an ocelot hoping to make a meal of it. The chase is on.

A) How can you tell that the margay is a good climber?
This shows that the margay is a good climber because it can hang upside down from a branch, which is very difficult. The word ‘canopy’ shows that the margay is climbing in the tops of the trees. This shows that the margay is a strong and skilled climber.
