Despite its relatively small size, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve has roughly as many tree species as the USA!

The margay is barely a body length ahead. It has to make a split second decision. Should it keep running up or head to another tree? With its long tail whipping side to side, the margay sprints along the closest branch. In a flash, it leaps from one tree to another! It’s enough to lose the ocelot. The other cat makes its way to the ground, dejected. It just shows, you have to keep your wits about you in the cloud forest. There is always something bigger that wants to eat you…

Not long after the excitement of the chase, the first rays of sunlight start to brighten the sky. This signals to the margay that it’s time to head home. Resplendent quetzals take to the skies and greet the day with a chorus of KOWEE KEOW K’LOO. As it walks through the forest, the margay notices a capuchin monkey feeding on flowers. A brightly coloured tanager flits about, collecting moss to make its globe-shaped nest. The margay finally reaches its cosy hollow, exhausted from its adventures. As it curls up for the day, the calm sounds of a gentle breeze and light rain lull it to sleep.
