Amusement Park Fun with Motion

March 12, 2026

Today We Will...

Exlpore potential and kinetic energy using a roller coaster simulator.

Discuss motion and what it means to move.

Learn how motion, force, and energy are all connected.

Learning Objectives and Standards

  • We can define motion and position.
  • We can give examples of energy.
  • We can recognize the difference between potential energy and kinetic energy.
  • We can explain the transfer of energy when objects collide.

Warm Up - Let's Get the Fun Started!

What Does it Mean to Move?

When you think of the word movement, what do you think of? Think of three words that describe movement in some way.

What is Motion?

Motion is a change in position. It is caused by a force. A force is a push or a pull. Example: Will the ball he is holding move itself? What does he need to do to get it to move?

We Use Force Everyday!

  • Lifting a box
  • Pushing and pulling a door
  • Kicking a football
  • Stretching a spring or a rubber band
  • Pulling a wagon
  • Dribbling a basketball
  • Typing on a keyboard

What is Energy?

Energy is the ability to do work and is what makes things happen all around us. Exmaples: heat, light, sound, electicity, and motion.

HOw Are Energy, Force, and Motion Connected?

Remember the little boy playing the amusement park game? He had to apply force to put the ball in motion. What will happen when the ball hits the bottles?

Transferring Energy

If he throws the ball hard, will it move slow or fast? Will it hit the cans hard or soft? If he hits the cans hard, how will they spread out?

Potential vs. Kinetic Energy

1. When a roller coaster is in motion, it has kinetic energy. 2. When a roller coaster is at rest, it has kinetic energy. 3. When a roller coaster is in motion, it has potential energy. 4. When a roller coaster is at rest, it has potential energy.

Exit Ticket

Which of these describes motion?A. a force that causes objects to fall toward the center of the Earth B. a change in position C. how fast an object moves over time D. a push or a pull

Click Play and Observe!

1. True or False: During the ride, I can see both potential and kinetic energy.

Potential Energy

Kinetic Energy

  • energy that is stored
  • it has the potenital to move, but hasn't yet
  • energy in motion
  • the more speed, the more kinetic energy

4. During Step 1, the roller coaster has the MOST potential energy. Is it at rest or in motion?

Click Step to Move Through Steps 1-6!

2. What happens to the potential energy and kinetic energy at each step? Circle your answers on the table.

Click Play and Observe Velocity!

5. What is velocity? When the roller coaster has more kinectic energy, does the velocity increase or decrease?

3. At Step 5, the roller coaster has the MOST kinetic energy! Is it at rest or in motion?
