Annapurna Shivaya, 45 years old, India

“In 2023, I decided to launch a noodle production unit with other women farmers. Thanks to the support we received, we were able to purchase motorised machines and modernise what had previously been a very demanding manual process. Today, our business generates a stable income for our families and even contributes to the local economy.”

Luz Marina Ladino, 47 years old, Colombia

“By learning about the life realities of other women farmers, I came to better understand the value of my own land. The soil wastes away when we forget what it has to offer us. Today, I want to demonstrate that by promoting our knowledge and our local land, we can create opportunities here, so that our children no longer need to leave. We have everything we need at home, so let's bring it to life."

Hka Tawng, 43 years old, Myanmar

"I started my farm three years ago with six goats. Now, my herd has more than 40 animals. This activity contributes to my children's school fees and household needs. I also took part in animal health training. I am now an animal health worker for the community, meaning I am also called upon in other villages to treat their animals."

Segunda Indibé, 31 years old, Guinea-Bissau

“I trained to be a nursery school teacher. Almost every day for two years, I cycled nearly 9 kilometres to get to class. When my bike broke down, I walked. I am the daughter of a farmer. My mother paid most of my school fees by working our family land. I am convinced that women farmers are strong, capable of leading and running a business, and apt to build a better future for their children.”

Zaituni Selemani Namkola, Tanzania

“What motivates me is changing the community's perception of women's roles and supporting their right to be heard.” Zaituni is a woman farmer who has become a leader in her community. She is one of three people elected to the Mtwara District Council in Tanzania and is the first female chairperson of her village, Mingw'ena.

María Josefa Cusco, 37 years old, Ecuador

"Our women's group means the world to me. So much has changed in my life since I became part of this community. When I am in need, I receive support from the others. We share our food, exchange seeds and help each other out. I now also own two cows and work on other families' land."

Khadidja Kotto Bakoulou, 51 years old, Chad

Eighteen years ago, Khadidja Kotto Bakoulou and other widows joined forces and formed a network. Every woman was encouraged to participate in decision-making processes. After lengthy negotiations, the women were granted six hectares of land. "Now we are no longer dependent on external support. All the widows take care of their children and ensure that they go to school and pay more attention to their health. The families now eat three meals a day."

Salamatou Zamnaou, 38 years old - Niger

"I get up at 4 a.m., sweep the yard, and go fetch water. When I get back, I pound millet to make balls, do the laundry and dishes, and then wash my children. In the evening, I sweep my yard again, make dinner, and go to bed around 9 p.m." In between, the farmer plows her fields using agroecological methods that have helped her a lot. "I am proud to have been trained. Because, as an African proverb says, instead of giving someone fish every time, it is better to teach them how to fish."
