(AC-23) Rods and rings
- The Rods and Rings (RR) pattern is a distinctive cytoplasmic pattern seen on HEp-2 cells and characterized by elongated rod-like structures (linear, smooth filaments) and circular or annular ring-shaped structures, vafrying in length and orientation. Typically with 1-5 structures per cell located in the cytoplasm (not in the nucleus).
- Antigens: The principal autoantigen associated with RR is inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase type 2 (IMPDH2).
- Associated Diseases: Hepatitis C has the strongest and most well-established association with RR.

Associated Diseases
Hepatitis C Hepatitis C is a liver disease caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). It can range from a mild illness lasting a few weeks to a serious, long-term illness. Left untreated, hepatitis C can lead to serious liver problems, like scarring and cancer. Many people with hepatitis C don't look or feel sick so might not know they have the virus! If you do develop symptoms, you will notice them 2-12 weeks after infection with the virus. Symptoms can include dark urine or clay-colored stools, feeling tired, fever, joint pain, loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain, throwing up, or jaundice. Most people can be cured of hepatitis C with timely treatment. If you don't get treatment, you can develop chronic liver disease even if you don't have any symptoms for years.
