Where is Pakistan?

Pakistan is an Asian country located in the south of the continent

The scale of the catastrophe

  • Between June and October 2022, Pakistan faced the worst floods in its recent history.
  • One-third of the country was submerged (an area equivalent to the size of the United Kingdom).
  • A state of emergency was declared in August 2022.

The Environmental Causes

Extreme Monsoons

Glacier Melting

La Niña

Rainfall 3 to 5 times higher than the historical average.

A climatic phenomenon that intensified rainfall in the region.

Pakistan has more than 7,000 glaciers. An extreme heat wave in May accelerated the thaw.

the "triple threat"

People and Economy impact

  • Mass displacement:
more than 33 million people affected (1 in 7 Pakistanis).
  • Human toll:
more than 1,700 deaths, including a large number of children.
  • Stagnent water and destroyed sanitation systems led to a major public health crisis, with outbreakers of Malaria and Cholera.

Ecological and Social Impact

Water Contamination

The floods destroyed sanitation systems, leading to a public health crisis.

Habitat Loss

Deforestation

Millions of acres of agricultural land were submerged, destroying crops and killing over a million head of livestock.

The lack of forest cover in certain areas increased soil erosion and made landslides much more destructive

The Global Issue: Climate Injustice

WORLD'S LARGEST EMITTERS OF GREENHOUSE GASES

  • Pakistan contributes less than 1% of global greenhouse gas emissions.
  • It is ranked among the 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change.
  • The injustice: those who have contributed least to global warming are suffering the most.

The "Loss and Damage" Fund

Rich Nations should help pay for the destruction caused by their carbon footprints.
