Context CLues
Context clues are hints found in a sentence or paragraph that help readers understand the meaning of unfamiliar words. They are an important reading skill because they make it easier to understand what you’re reading and build your vocabulary naturally.
There are several types of context clues students can look for:
- Definition clues – The meaning of the word is directly explained in the sentence.
- Example: The arboretum, a place where many trees are grown, was beautiful in the fall.
- Synonym clues – A similar word is used nearby to help explain the meaning.
- Example: The child was elated, or very happy, about her birthday gift.
- Antonym clues – The opposite meaning is given to show contrast.
- Example: Unlike his gloomy mood yesterday, he felt cheerful today.
- Example clues – Examples are given to show what the word means.
- Example: Celestial bodies, such as the sun, moon, and stars, can be seen in the night sky.
- Inference clues – You have to use reasoning and clues from the text to figure out the meaning.
- Example: She grabbed her parka before stepping into the snowstorm. (You can infer that a parka is a warm coat.)
By practicing with context clues, students become stronger readers who can more easily understand new words and ideas.
