Talking about history

What words can we use?

Future: The future means the time that has yet to come. Events have not happened yet when thinking of the future.

Past: The past refers to an earlier time, the people and societies who lived it, and the events that took place there.

History is the study of past events. People know what happened in the past by looking at things from the past, like books, newspapers, letters, buildings, and artifacts. There are many words we can use to describe our history, too! Past, present, future, decade, century, and generation are just a few words you can use. Click through the cards to see how these words can be used to describe history.

Generation: A generation is all of the people born and living at about the same time. It can also be described as a time during which children are born and grow up, become adults, and begin to have children of their own.

Century: A century is a period of 100 years. A centennial or centenary is a hundredth anniversary, or a celebration or remembrance of an event which took place a hundred years earlier.

Present: The present means existing at this time. The present is happening right now. It is the period of time between the past and future.

Decade: A decade is a period of 10 years. Decades may describe any ten-year period, such as those of a person's life.

It is important to study history. History shows us models of good and responsible citizenship. History also teaches us how to learn from the past. History helps us understand change in our world!

Distinguish Past, Present, and Future

How does Joseph talk about the past, present, and future?

One way to think about time is in terms of past, present, and future. Yesterday is in the past. Today is in the present. Tomorrow is in the future.

Present

Our world today was created by events and people in the past. It is important we understand our history. Learning history gives us a chance to talk about morals and ethics—the best ways to think and act in life. It also allows us to get to know the great men and women that have helped shape our country. Well done!

Let's talk

Take a moment and sit down with an adult who lives with you. Together, make a list of the important events in his or her life. Talk about why those events were important.

Put it in order

Put the list in order. Write in order the things that happened. Start with the first thing that happened. Keep writing the list of the next things that happened in that person’s life up to the last thing that happened. You can write a number next to each thing that happened. Together, you just made a timeline!

It's your turn

Now, create a timeline of the important events in your life. Make a list of important events that have happened to you over the years. Write down the things that are happening right now. Write down the things that might happen in the future.

Make it personal

Now, you can add pictures or drawings to your timeline. Add pictures of things that happened in the past. You can add photographs from the past of when you were a baby. You can take pictures of things that are happening today. You can draw pictures of things that will happen in the future. This is your timeline!
