Talking about history
What words can we use?
Future: The future means the time that has yet to come. Events have not happened yet when thinking of the future.
Past: The past refers to an earlier time, the people and societies who lived it, and the events that took place there.
History is the study of past events. People know what happened in the past by looking at things from the past, like books, newspapers, letters, buildings, and artifacts. There are many words we can use to describe our history, too! Past, present, future, decade, century, and generation are just a few words you can use. Click through the cards to see how these words can be used to describe history.

Let's talk
Take a moment and sit down with an adult who lives with you. Together, make a list of the important events in his or her life. Talk about why those events were important.
Put it in order
Put the list in order. Write in order the things that happened. Start with the first thing that happened. Keep writing the list of the next things that happened in that person’s life up to the last thing that happened. You can write a number next to each thing that happened. Together, you just made a timeline!
It's your turn
Now, create a timeline of the important events in your life. Make a list of important events that have happened to you over the years. Write down the things that are happening right now. Write down the things that might happen in the future.
Make it personal
Now, you can add pictures or drawings to your timeline. Add pictures of things that happened in the past. You can add photographs from the past of when you were a baby. You can take pictures of things that are happening today. You can draw pictures of things that will happen in the future. This is your timeline!
