Planning is the KEY to sucsess
Decide what kind of quilt you want to make. Think about the size, colors, pattern, and purpose. Some quilts are decorative while others are meant to be used every day.
Sew through all three layers of the quilt to hold them in place. This stitching keeps the batting from shifting and adds texture to the quilt. Quilting can be done in straight lines, simple patterns, or decorative designs using a sewing machine or by hand.

Fabric choice affects how your quilt looks and lasts. Most quilters use 100% cotton because it is strong and easy to sew Choose fabrics with colors that work well together and include light and dark shades so the pattern stands out. Many quilters also wash their fabric first to prevent shrinking later.
Binding is the fabric strip that finishes the edges of the quilt and covers the raw layers. First, cut long strips of fabric and sew them together to create one continuous strip. Sew the binding around the edges of the quilt, usually folding it over the edge so it wraps around both the front and back. Then stitch it down carefully so the edges are secure and the quilt has a clean, finished look.
Use a ruler and fabric scissors or a rotary cutter to cut your fabric into the shapes needed for your pattern. Lay the pieces out to plan your pattern before sewing. Sew the pieces into rows, then sew the rows together to make the quilt top Layer the quilt top, batting (middle layer), and backing fabric. .
