What is Changing

Starting next school year, all courses will transition to a weekly module structure in Canvas, with Modules serving as the primary way students access and move through course content. This shift will create a consistent weekly structure across all courses, providing students with a clear, predictable learning pathway and a more streamlined navigation experience.

In Summary

Beginning next school year, all courses will transition to a weekly module structure in Canvas to create a consistent, clear, and student-centered learning experience. Modules will serve as the primary pathway for accessing content, organized by the instructional week in progress and following a standardized naming convention beginning with “Week #:” This consistent weekly format will improve navigation, organization, and predictability for students across all courses.
A weekly module structure will also support more intentional pacing by helping distribute assignments more evenly and reducing the likelihood of students being overwhelmed by too many tasks due at once. By implementing this structure thoughtfully and consistently, we can reduce confusion, support executive functioning, and enhance the overall learning experience schoolwide. We appreciate your partnership as we work together to strengthen instructional design and student success.

For Virtual Lessons, you may choose one of the following options: Option 1 - Create a dedicated Virtual Lesson module positioned at the top of your Modules page. Option 2 - Create a Marking Period (MP) Virtual Lesson module that serves as a transition between weeks and marks the beginning of a new marking period.

If you prefer to include your Virtual Lessons (VLs) within your weekly modules, you may continue to do so. Simply ensure that your Virtual Lesson is also added to either Option 1 (a dedicated Virtual Lesson module at the top of the Modules page) or Option 2 (a Marking Period Virtual Lesson module used as a transition between marking periods), in addition to placing it within the appropriate weekly module. This allows you to maintain your preferred structure while also meeting the new organizational expectations.

Requirements include beginning each module title with “Week #:” to ensure consistency across courses. Teachers may use their discretion to determine what follows (e.g., unit title, lesson topic, or no additional descriptor), based on their course structure and content needs.

Module Title Guidelines

  • Avoid including specific dates in module titles.
  • Limit the use of excessive numbers, special characters, or emojis.
  • If emojis are used, place them at the end of the module title for consistency and readability.
  • Be mindful the length of your modules titles. The shorter the better!

Additional Considerations: Content within modules may have requirements set to sequential order if it aligns with your course structure and instructional goals.
