Hydrogen peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is a common remedy for softening and removing earwax. It works by breaking down the earwax into smaller pieces, which can then naturally drain out of the ear. Hydrogen peroxide releases oxygen when it comes into contact with earwax, causing it to foam and loosen the wax. This process can help soften and dislodge the wax, making it easier to remove.

Hydrogen Peroxide: Key Symptoms

1. Skin irritation & bleached wax 2. No symptoms (or fuller sensation)

Hydrogen Peroxide: Actions

Please note: this is for guidance only, and you should always rely on your clinical judgement to ensure your patients receive appropriate care and treatment.

1. If you are unsure send a remote review to TympaHealth for a second opinion or advice. 2. Advise the patient to stop using hydrogen peroxide drops. 3. If further wax removal is required, advise the patient to keep both ears dry for 7–10 days and then rebook them with the qualified microsuction practitioner. (to allow the skin to settle and wax to bind again). 4. If asymptomatic and no further microsuction is required, no further review required.

Within normal limits of hearing

Typically, individuals suffering from overuse of treatments containing hydrogen peroxide may not experience difficulties with their hearing. Consequently, their hearing check results are likely to fall inside the range considered normal (with points above the 25dB threshold).
