Opening & Framing

Who's in Your Classroom?

Contextualize your topic with a subtitle

Right now, in your classroom...

  • 15% of all U.S. public school students are served under IDEA
  • More than two-thirds spend 80%+ of their school day in general education
  • That includes CTE, elective, and specialized courses — not just core academics
  • Special education enrollment has grown 12.6% since 2019

Where most teachers actually are...

Only 30% of general education teachers feel strongly confident they can successfully teach students with learning disabilities. (National Center for Learning Disabilities & Understood.org (n = 1,350 teachers)) Fewer than 10 states require specific coursework in teaching students with learning disabilities — even for licensed teachers.

How can we support this student here?

What this session is & Isn't

This Session is:

This Session is NOT:

  • Built for CTE and general education classrooms; not just core academics.
  • Focused on disengagement, refusal, and real instructional barriers.
  • Designed for schools where EC co-teaching time is limited.
  • Practical: you'll leave with something you can use this week.
  • Lowering your standards or expectations.
  • Asking you to become a special education expert.
  • Adding to your planning load.

Clairfying Responsibilities

What exactly is my job when it comes to EC students?

Structure your content

what the law actually says:

Under IDEA, general education teachers are legally required to:

  • Implement the accomodations and supports listed in each student's IEP
  • Be informed of their specific responsibiilities related to that IEP
  • Participate in IEP development, including identifying what students need to access your classroom
  • Make good faith efforts to help students meet their IEP goals.

Shared Responsibility

Who does what

VS

Modifications: change WHAT a student is expected to master The standard changes. Grading reflects a different set of expectations.

Accomodations: change HOW a student accesses content. The standard does not change. Grading does not change.

About your ec colleagues workload

What happens on your EC colleague's end... that you may not see:

Writing and managing individual IEPs for every student on their caseload.

Communicating with families about each student's progress.

Collecting and documenting progress data on IEP goals.

Ensuring legal compliance for every student, document, and deadline.

Attending and facilitating IEP meetings, often before or after school.

Coordinating with related service providers.

The Grading Quesiton

I want to push students beyond their comfort zones, but I don't want to set them up for failure. Ensuring that I am grading them fairly is also a challenge." — Pre-survey response, Gen Ed teacher

Questions?

EC students often need additional time, repeated directions, or small-group support — and meeting those needs while keeping the rest of the class engaged is the challenge.

Visual content is a cross-cutting, universal language, like music. We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

With this feature...

This would be a good place to add a statistic about our school. Maybe something about how many EC students are enrolled, or something.

How can we support this student here?

When students with disabilities are well-supported in general education settings, their academic outcomes, and their outcomes after graduation, are significantly better.
