Since 1937, MAPEI has grown from a small Milan-based company founded by Rodolfo Squinzi into a global leader in building solutions.
What started with innovative adhesives for floors and walls soon expanded into advanced products for ceramics, waterproofing, and concrete.
Driven by a strong focus on research and innovation, MAPEI began its international expansion in the late 1970s, opening its first plant in Canada, and then across all major global markets.
Under the leadership of Giorgio Squinzi, the company strengthened its values, people-first culture, and passion for continuous improvement, summed up in his iconic motto:

Welcome to the Mapei Group!
An important new stepping stone
Giorgio Squinzi, a graduate in Industrial Chemistry, began contributing to Mapei while still a student, developing innovative products that supported the company’s international growth. One of the first was ADESILEX L1, an alcohol‑based linoleum adhesive that eliminated the need for installers to carry sand to job sites.This was followed by ADESILEX P5, ADESILEX P7 and ADESILEX P9. ADESILEX P9 is still produced today and remains highly appreciated for its technical performance.
A revolution in the world of ceramics
Mapei is projected into the future through KERABOND, Mapei’s first polymer-free cementitious adhesive. The introduction of KERALASTIC meant tiles could now be applied on various types of surfaces: from cementitious render to metal. SIGILLANTE 3433 silicone sealant – which we now call MAPESIL AC – is created for making elastic seals in ceramic surfaces. In 1971 Mapei captured everybody’s attention at Saie, an international building fair, by hanging a Fiat 500 from the ceiling attached to a tile by nothing more than Mapei’s ADESILEX P9 glue.
Always one step ahead
Mapei’s subsidiaries grow year after year, and with them the number of product lines. Mapei is constantly focused on sustainability and formulating increasingly high-performance products. A commitment to safeguard the environment and people's health that is also expressed through the commissioning of new manufacturing facilities using locally-sourced and eco-sustainable materials. In 2016, Mapei published its first Sustainability Report to share with its stakeholders the results it had reached.
A great business story
Mapei was founded in Milan in 1937 by Rodolfo Squinzi and Elsa Banfi. Initially, a paint manufacturer named Materiali Autarchici per l’Edilizia e l’Industria, the name was later changed to highlight its support for the construction sector.
The original Via Cafiero headquarters, once home to seven employees, now hosts the Corporate Research Centre. Mapei’s first product, SILEXCOLOR, a silicate paint, quickly became a bestseller.
The company soon moved into adhesives for resilient materials, leading to the development of ADESILEX, an evolution of the earlier Italeum adhesive.
INTERNATIONALISATION
A family business on an international scale
The Group’s growth and its consolidation on international markets have been enabled by a careful internationalisation strategy, begun in 1978 with the opening of a plant in Canada.
Mapei’s product range always increases, including the Group’s other brands in Europe.
The Mapei R&D Laboratories work to formulate durable and high-quality products with low environmental impact to reduce CO₂ emissions.
Our sustainable products
We provide innovative, eco‑sustainable solutions that are safe, reliable and long‑lasting, while minimizing environmental impact. We fully offset the CO₂ emissions of our products through certified credits supporting renewable energy and reforestation projects. For Mapei, protecting the planet is a concrete commitment throughout the entire product life cycle.
We invest heavily in innovation, dedicating over 70% of our research to improving products.
Mapei share the results achieved in the field of sustainability through Mapei Sustainability Report:

- to promote the activities of its employees and support local communities

A decade of innovations
The Mapei professional cycling team was set up in 1993 and dominated many international races for years. There was a generation change in the company in the late 1990s: the children, Marco and Veronica, joined the company, thus renewing the company’s commitment to key sectors of the group: Research & Development and Internationalisation.
Internationalisation and Research & Development: a winning partnership
The first phase of internationalisation began in 1978 through the opening of its first factory in Laval, Canada, and the founding of Mapei Inc. and then Mapei Corp. in the United States. Giorgio Squinzi took over the company from his father, Rodolfo, in 1984, with the help of his sister, the lawyer Laura Squinzi. Giorgio’s wife, Adriana Spazzoli, took control of the Mapei Group’s Marketing and Communication operations.

The power of teamwork, even in sport
Mapei Sport Service is founded in 1997 and, in 1998, the Mapei professional cycling team triumphs at the Paris-Roubaix. In 2003 Mapei took over U.S. Sassuolo Calcio.
In 2006, MAPEI was the sponsor and lucky charm of the Italian soccer team when it won the World Cup for the fourth time.
Research. Manufacturing. Satisfaction.
PIANOLINA is created: a ready-to-use, magnesium gypsum-based skimming compound capable of lightening the load of installers. Sensing the enormous potential of ceramics, Mapei launches ADESILEX P, the first solvent-based tiling adhesive. Another successful product soon followed: ADESILEX PM.
Looking to the future
Veronica and Marco, who had already been with the company since the early 1990s, took over from their father Giorgio as the company’s CEOs in 2019. As well as them, the board of directors currently includes their cousin, Simona Giorgetta, and the lawyer Laura Squinzi as President. Mapei proves to be a solid but flexible company, capable of adapting to change efficiently while remaining true to its own history and corporate strategy. Thanks to a range of products meeting all the needs of the building trade with a particular focus on sustainability, durability and high-quality products, the Group continues to grow and invest, tackling new challenges with the same passion as always.

Mapei was founded in Milan in 1937 by Rodolfo Squinzi and Elsa Banfi. Initially, a paint manufacturer named Materiali Autarchici per l’Edilizia e l’Industria, the name was later changed to highlight its support for the construction sector.
The original Via Cafiero headquarters, once home to seven employees, now hosts the Corporate Research Centre. Mapei’s first product, SILEXCOLOR, a silicate paint, quickly became a bestseller.
The company soon moved into adhesives for resilient materials, leading to the development of ADESILEX, an evolution of the earlier Italeum adhesive.
INTERNATIONALISATION
A family business on an international scale
The Group’s growth and its consolidation on international markets have been enabled by a careful internationalisation strategy, begun in 1978 with the opening of a plant in Canada.
Mapei’s product range always increases, including the Group’s other brands in Europe.
The Mapei R&D Laboratories work to formulate durable and high-quality products with low environmental impact to reduce CO₂ emissions.

A decade of innovations
The Mapei professional cycling team was set up in 1993 and dominated many international races for years. There was a generation change in the company in the late 1990s: the children, Marco and Veronica, joined the company, thus renewing the company’s commitment to key sectors of the group: Research & Development and Internationalisation.
Internationalisation and Research & Development: a winning partnership
The first phase of internationalisation began in 1978 through the opening of its first factory in Laval, Canada, and the founding of Mapei Inc. and then Mapei Corp. in the United States. Giorgio Squinzi took over the company from his father, Rodolfo, in 1984, with the help of his sister, the lawyer Laura Squinzi. Giorgio’s wife, Adriana Spazzoli, took control of the Mapei Group’s Marketing and Communication operations.

The power of teamwork, even in sport
Mapei Sport Service is founded in 1997 and, in 1998, the Mapei professional cycling team triumphs at the Paris-Roubaix. In 2003 Mapei took over U.S. Sassuolo Calcio. In 2006, MAPEI was the sponsor and lucky charm of the Italian soccer team when it won the World Cup for the fourth time.
Research. Manufacturing. Satisfaction.
PIANOLINA is created: a ready-to-use, magnesium gypsum-based skimming compound capable of lightening the load of installers. Sensing the enormous potential of ceramics, Mapei launches ADESILEX P, the first solvent-based tiling adhesive. Another successful product soon followed: ADESILEX PM.
Looking to the future
Veronica and Marco, who had already been with the company since the early 1990s, took over from their father Giorgio as the company’s CEOs in 2019. As well as them, the board of directors currently includes their cousin, Simona Giorgetta, and the lawyer Laura Squinzi as President. Mapei proves to be a solid but flexible company, capable of adapting to change efficiently while remaining true to its own history and corporate strategy. Thanks to a range of products meeting all the needs of the building trade with a particular focus on sustainability, durability and high-quality products, the Group continues to grow and invest, tackling new challenges with the same passion as always.
